Title: Looking at the Scholar and Brainiac
Post by: Euqene on October 20, 2016, 08:03:13 AM
I was just wondering if the Brainiac is a better ball than the Scholar. I plan on picking up one of the two so give me your opinion on the balls.

Brainiac has some big time followers. I remember the scholar never even selling, they had to rebate the ball to sell it.

Brainiac is the good one!

One thing I will mention about the Scholar is the vicious hook when bowling on clean backends. The people I see having success with the Scholar are lower rev bowlers who love it.

Yes, I don't think it's as simple as saying that one is better than the other; it depends on your style, what you're bowling on, and what you want it to do. From what I've seen/heard, the Brainiac seems to be the more versatile choice of the two. Also, I think it will handle a bit more oil. The Scholar seemed to be very clean up front and very strong off the spot, which is good in the right circumstances, but it may not be your best everyday look. So, again, it really depends on what you're looking for.

Gene summed it up really well the Scholar was very condition specific in it's OOB condition. If you nocked the polish off it was a better ball. The Braniac seems to be more even tempered but still has a really good backend.

If you have good fronts and a well demarked dry spot and really want a ball that comes off the spot the Scholar is a good choice.

The Braniac starts a little earlier and is somewhat more controllable off the spot. Braniac is one of the better balls in what's been a great line.

I have never thrown the Scholar but I do own the Brainiac.  It is one of my favorite balls.  I am a low rev low speed bowler.  It is clean through the front, and moves pretty good when it hits the breakpoint.  It also does a great job on the backend going through the pins.  Mine is a 14 pound.

I have both and the Scholar is GREAT with some volume up front and crisp back ends. The motion is makes down lane is very impressive. It is much more "shot specific" for me than the Brainiac. The Brainiac is a little more versatile where I can continue to use it even when the lanes transition during any given set. As soon as the shot "goes away" from the Scholar, I know it's time to switch balls. It is good at what it does, meaning the Scholar, but if you are looking for a little more versatile ball I would go with the Brainiac personally.
