Need something to tackle sport shot conditions.
« on: March 13, 2006, 09:32:44 PM »
HI folks,

Ive been weaning off of my Storm stuff, and so far have a Smokin that I use on just about any THS.  I have a sports shot league coming up and am afraid that the volume of oil and lack of dry boards is going to make it difficult to continue to use the SI.  Im interested in the Scorchin, but thats a big step up and may leave me a big gap in between.  Im looking for suggestions to fill that gap and also provide a ball that could be a good benchmark ball.  I was leaning toward the Nemesis, or the Absolute.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

thanks

JD

What about just playing striaght down 10th board and see what will happen in the first place?

jd,

Unless you know for sure that your sport shot will have more oil, don't assume it will. Most do not use heavy oil.

If you decide to get a new ball, I'd suggest a moderate control drill, like a 2"x4" or 2"x5" or 1.5"x4", not an extreme one like pin on PAP.

Agree..

What is the volume of oil, length, ratio?  I suggest you learn these before making a decision. And of course what is your style?

As a side note, Ambush is a VERY controllable ball even with pin above and 5 to 5-1/2 from PAP layout. A masterpiece especially if you have high rev rate.
I like polished Nemesis also.. Very versatile..

my scorchin works really well for me, and so does my original.
On my sport shot league, the front and midlane are swamped with the backends on the inside bone dry. The whole outside is swamped all the way down. As long as I got something with good traction for the fronts and mids, i can shoot pretty decent. I can play the outside with my scorchin and play the inside with my OI and occasionally my SI.

Its hard to play with an inferno and not get burned. Last time I threw my inferno, the opposing bowler definitely got burned.

I would recomend saving your money cause sport shots are not like house shots were you can buy a ball to counter act the difficulty. I would recomend furthering your game by getting your mechanics repeatable, and work on your spares.

Generally have to second that, to be a sport shot they just need a closer ratio of oil in the middle of the lane to the oil on the outside, it could be anywhere from a complete flood to dry.  Try to stick with smoother stuff for the most part, there is still room for snappy stuff like the smokin, but generally you want a ball with a smooth predictable roll.  Look into the asym series.  I find that the Strike Zone, Zone Classic, and Vapor zone are all good choices for such a shot, also the Absolute, or Ambush should fit the bill.

Thanks for the replies.

Im a stroker with med revs and ball speed.

The lanes that are holding the sports shot league run heavier oil than most year round, and plan to continue to do so.  They said they will run 5 patterns from 38-50 ft.  I was able to try the Smokin on a heavier oil, flatter pattern they put out for a tournament, and did exactly that, played strait up the 10, basically strait into the pocket.  Carry was just OK, as the Smokin slid most of the way as expected.  Im not looking for a ball to make things easier, I know thats not going to happen.  Im just looking for something like others have said, smooth, predictable with more midlane than the Smokin will give me.  I have the Trifecta, but it was drilled to go long, and I was told the pin is too long to redrill it to read the lanes earlier, so its just not working for me.

The trifecta should be smoother with nearly any layout.  There are some tricks that a ball driller can sometimes use to get an earlier rolling layout even with a long pin.  Hearing this latest post it sounds like your best bet may be the Strike, very good rather even roll.
