Massive Damage vs Anaconda
« on: July 04, 2011, 12:59:08 AM »
Am I not seeing something or is the Massive Damage just a replacement for the slow selling Anaconda, recently discontinued?

While the cores are different looking, they are so close in RG (2.464" vs 2.492") and in differential (.047" vs.050") as to make little or no difference. The coverstock is the same Activator Plus,  and the same finish procedure.

Brunswick's own numbers for Hook, Length & Breakpoint Shape are virtually identical: 155, 105, and 70 (Anaconda) vs 75 (Massive Damage).

Jeff:  The Massive was designed to fit in the same reaction slot as the Anaconda, but is intended to have more of a Damage-like shape.  That is, the Massive should be cleaner in front and sharper at the break than the Anaconda.

I'll be throwing the two side-by-side sometime this week (maybe today, if I can get the Massive punched quickly enough), so I'll be able to give you a better comparison then.

I have had a few different bowling balls with the activator+ pearl cover and very similar cores.(domestic and overseas) They all rolled great but were not identical. The surface for me has been all the difference. One at 500 + polish and one at 4000 + polish were my two favorites. Both had slightly different cores. The Anaconda box finish was ok, but took it up to 4000 and polish to get a more desired reaction. Plus the Massive will cost less then the Anaconda with rebates, which is another great bonus for me.

Be good, or be good at it.

So just for you, Jeff, I punched up the Massive and threw it today.

Granted, it was on a house shot that was chopped up a bit by open play, but the Massive reacted like a cross between the Anaconda and Rattler.  It was cleaner than the Anaconda, and it wanted to recover better when I got in and sent it, but it wasn't quite as sharp at the break as my Rattler used to be.

I'll be throwing it in league on Wednesday, I should be able to post more after that.

Just as you predicted, Ray.Thanks.

(We had discussed the Anaconda previously in exxchanged messages.)
I had drilled my Anaconda with the CG kicked out a little to allow a weight hole, in order not to get too strong a backend. It has been been pretty even reacting with most surfaces that allowed me to use it where I thought I should. Polish required too much dry, but 3000 grit was a good intermediate surface. I was still looking for slightly more backend so I might plug up that weight hole to reduce flare. We shall see. Meanwhile I'll keep the MD in mind.

After watching it rolled in Texas last week at the demo, it reminded me more of the Absolute than the Anaconda...it looked very impressive, as did the Ulti-Max

After drilling my first one with a layout that is more control than my Anaconda's, I have noticed the new Damage is still stonger off the spot than the anaconda's.  Haven't seen any more length, but the backend is much closer to an Absolute.

Have to agree with Ray. After rolling the Massive this weekend, it is closer to a Rattler type roll than the Anaconda for me as well.

So far my Massive has been great. It reads the lane as predictably as you'd expect with the cover, but does have a little more angle late than the Anaconda, which was "smoooooooth city". I'd also agree that it fits between the Anaconda and Rattler for shape.

I dropped mine off today and I'm picking it up tomorrow.  I can't wait!

The back-end I get from my Damage reminds me of my Danger Zone, which is drilled to go long (pin up, cg kicked out with a weight hole).  Both balls go long and rev hard off the dry. The difference with the Damage is it's a much more controlled movement.

I think the Massive Damage and Damage will be a great 1-2 punch for anything but thick oil, which I never see.

I think any ball with this cover should be considered a "control" ball, especially for a pearl reactive.  The slightly different shape is nice, but any ball that rolls predictably, yet hits like a pearl reactive is a great addition to an arsenal. I am thrilled that Brunswick has kept the Activator+ pearl cover stock around.

When comparing anything unless you have a controlled comparison/test you will only have perception. You need to understand that unless both balls are drilled at the same time and used the exact same amount of times, it is all in the users eyes. Another factor can and usually be the perception of how the ball looks as it travels down the lane. Color plays a big part in what a bowler sees as far as reaction, taking into consideration lighting as well as oil pattern.

It easier to say with all considered, the Massive, looking at the numbers, should be a slower, longer response than the Anaconda as well as Absolute but it will be very minimal in my opinion. If you liked you Absolute this is a great compliment or replacement.
