Title: Mastermind Intellect?
Post by: CoorZero on February 19, 2016, 10:02:35 PM
I was browsing in the local pro shop today and noticed they still had a Mastermind Intellect on closeout. My question is how does it compare to the newer releases that are out today? The original Mastermind sold really well around here but I don't remember seeing too many of the Intellect variety. I'm still looking for a new heavy oil ball and if that is pretty comparable to most of the stuff that's out today I might just snag it on a good deal. Any input would be much appreciated.

The Intellect was my favorite by far. Stronger cover than the original. It's got a great midlane and back-end motion. If you can pick it up on sale I would highly recommend it. Also one of the better looking balls for Brunswick.

The Intellect was cleaner through the heads than the original, with a bigger move late.  For most of us bowling typical house shots it's got plenty of strength to handle medium to heavier volumes.  I would recommend it.

For the truly heavy volume nothing beats my Nirvana so far.

Medium to heavy conditions use out of box.
Heavy conditions hit it with a 2000 pad.

I had 2. Very strong ball. Gets through the heads nicely and is very strong when it makes it's move. On closeout would be a great deal compared to any new release. I never used mine much because it was a lot of ball.

The Intellect will go a little longer than the original, but have a stronger motion on the backend of the lane. It should fit your need of a heavier oil ball. And, it takes well to surface changes if out of box finish has too much of a skid / snap reaction.

I saw the same characteristics that Brandon noticed. For me, the Intellect was cleaner up front and MUCH stronger down the lane than the original. I actually had to knock some of the shine off of the Intellect to tame down the backend because the angle I was getting was pinging solid 9s all day long. Honestly, I think the Intellect was overlooked by many. If you set it up and prep it right, it's just as good or better than the original.

Thanks for the replies everybody. Sounds like this ball has the kind of reaction I usually prefer. I'll probably knock the shine off of it but not down to too low of a grit.

Any ideas for layouts? Some of my specs are 325 RPM, 16 MPH at the pins, a PAP of 4 5/8, and a fairly average amount of tilt. Like I said before I do want this for heavier oil.

Pin down, sand 500/2000. Good to go!

I ended up going with a pin up layout, that's generally something that works well for me and I thought it might match up with what I read the Intellect's strengths were.

As for the ball itself... holy crap. This thing is legitimately insane on the backend for a solid ball. I kept it at box finish figuring I just wanted to see what it would look like with that first. That's probably what it will stay at now and later on when I have some maintenance done on it.

It seems to be a little more touchy in regards to a consistent release than some other asymmetrical balls I've thrown, but I can't complain given all the good stuff that comes with the ball. Probably my favorite Brunswick piece in a long time. Now I have a decision to make regarding the Einstein that's on closeout at the pro shop...

Einstein is just as good. Had to take my Einstein down to 2000 to get a nice 1- 2 punch with these 2 balls.
