I have tried my mastermind with 4000 and with 4000+ polish on it and it just seems to hook way to much, could taking the surface down to 1000 or 2000 actual tame this ball down a bit?

It could but it could also be too strong at a lower surface. If you think it would work, try it out. Surface is always an experiment. If a lower surface doesn't work, I think you might be better off with a weaker ball

Or is not a good match for the pattern your bowling on. I had two of these. The pin down was way to early for me no matter what I did to the cover, so I sold it.The pin up one works much better for me with twice the carry.I still only use it on my pba league .It's not good on a house shot

My Mastermind is strictly for tournaments. It's a very strong and early hooking ball. If it's hooking too much for you, dulling the surface will only make it hook earlier but it will be smoother. Dulling the surface could also make it burn up if there is no head oil and the ball will be DOA at the pins.

If the static weights allow try a P1 balance hole. Be careful, start with a small hole 2.5" deep. I put one in one of my balls that was too large and it killed the reaction too much. -- JohnP

Step the surface up 500/1000/2000/4000/worn 4000 pad. When you get close to the reaction you are looking for, you can use polish to fine tune.
My experience is that most polishes give you more length, and that some polishes increase the reaction off the dry.
We have several bowlers killing our house shit with the Mastermind. My brother used his all three games Sundah night and shot 670 with a 180 in the first game. He shot 269 the third game and we have 5 men teams.
My Mastermind Intellect set up the same as my Mastermind is covering more boards although it is cleaner through the front. May be because it is new.
Ultimately, it depends on the way the shot plays and breaks down, the way you are trying to play the lanes and on how you throw the ball. The Mastermind is more versatile than many would think. It does a great job of blending over under and will carry when they get dry if you play the correct angle.

Mine is too much ball for THS. Tried some different surfaces, it's just too much for me. Great ball when there is a ton of oil though.

Anytime you decrease surface it will make the ball go longer before hooking after exiting the oil. It will not necessarily make it hook less. If you are bowling on a drier condition it may make it hook more.

Surface dictates length...core/engine dictates what it will do when it slows down...bigger core higher flare potential bigger distinct move...smaller core lower flare potential smoother lesser move
Bowlers attributes play a part also...more axis rotation increases change if direction
