Best ball for medium-heavy carrydown
« on: January 11, 2007, 07:16:41 PM »
Hi people, Im looking for a best ball for medium-heavy carrydown.
For your infos, I target 2nd arrow, bellying the ball about 2-3 boards towards the 10 pin. I have about medium rev and about 16mph ball speed. My 14 lbs Storm Ragin' Banshee skidded alot if there is heavy carrydown in the backends.
I was considering either Ebonite Angular one or Brunswick Radical inferno. What do you think?
Can you guys also suggest a pin placement for the ball too?

thanks

I would go with a Total Inferno 4-1/2 from axis. The Radical and the Angular are going to be too squirty on carrydown.

Straighter is greater on heavier oil.

Fuze Eliminator... if you still can get one. The ball was designed for this conditions, and does a great job! Just bad it is discontinued since 2002, and there had beeen, short of the Impulse Zone, no true replacement.

Basically, I would not go with a (polished) pearl ball rather a solid one with some surface. What about a Strike Zone, drilled for early roll and probably a lightly finer surface finish than OOB? A Scorchin' could also be an option, but is more expensive.

If the medium-heavy carrydown started out life as heavy oil, the Mammoth would eat it up.  Otherwise I'd go for a Strike Zone.

c) you're using a pearl. i dont know too many people who use pearls on carrydown unless its a pearl particle, and even then, they keep the ball tight.

Actually, the Ragin' Banshee is a light load particle pearl.  Minus the polish, particle pearls tend to eat carrydown for breakfast.  If the ball works well for a while, it may be that he just needs to take it down from 1500-grit polished to 1000-grit smooth.  With that surface, it shouldn't be so strong that it burns up (since the original surface suggests that the oil starts out closer to medium than heavy).  Don't take it to 80-grit and it should still work well enough.

Probably cost ten bucks.  Of course if he's like me, the point is getting a new ball.

besides squaring up, slower ball speed, more roll, etc., you need to avoid balls that are pearlized and/or polished. solid reactive or particle balls are your best bet. they should be smooth sanded or dull to ensure traction on the lane. the mammoth( particle ) or strike zone, scorchin' inferno, wizard( reactive ) would be your best options.

I didn't realize that a 2-3 board belly at the second arrow was half the lane.    Big hook on carrydown is probably a mistake, but that seems like at least a moderately tight line.

Strike Zone

or

Ambush

both handle carrydown, the Strike Zone will be much stronger of two oob finish.

No, no, no.  The Ambush is a polished particle pearl, and the Prince says you can't do that.

I'll take the light loaded polished pearl particle ball anyday on tough conditions.  It really smooths out the transition from head oil to carrydown to dry.  Ambush being an arcing ball, it doesn't over-react.  Just a really good ball.  Even factory polished, this ball can handle some oil!

The Strike Zone is the first solid reactive ball I have owned that almost ignores carrydown.  This was an unexpected plus.

Would agree with either of these, but have seen the Mammoth thrown and it seems to be a little stronger then either ofthese balls. Maybe it was the person throwing it, but still an option for you...

Guys, for additional info, the lanesman of the bowling centre I bowled oiled the lane for about 38 feet (I think using flat/block pattern) in the morning and most of the time he did not clean the backends.

As result, lots of hook bowlers in my country are quitting, giving rise to spinner type of bowlers. But for me, (although only 2 years hook bowling) I cant just quit and I'm taking the heavy carrydown as a challenge to improve my game. So, I welcomed any ideas on the best ball to be used for the type of my bowling centre lane conditions.

Ps: It really suck to have only one bowling centre in in my country.

Every bowling center, oil pattern, and individual bowler presents a different set of challenges.  Sometimes the very aggressive early rolling balls work great on a heavy short pattern, but like Conspirator said may not cut it on longer pattern, at least not without a surface adjustment.

There was one synthetic house that gave me fits.  All my reactive polished and reactive pearl balls would just jump when they hit dry at this place.  Then once they really poured the oil on but did not clean the back ends.  It seemed like a flood.  So I tried my Columbia Action and it worked great here.

Then even when they cleaned the backends I still used that ball on the shorter pattern and it never jumped.  It made the lane play like heavy oil because it read the front part of the lane.  The weaker reactive balls wouldn't read the head oil but would just jump when the hit dry.

The point is to match the ball to the lane conditions and sometimes this will surprise you.  I would have never thrown the Action there except for that one bad day.  I always thought it would be too much ball.

I don't own a Mammoth so I don't know if it would work for you there or not.  I would ask one of the Brunswick Tech guys that frequent this forum. They can give you the right advice.

Of the balls I own, I know for me the Strike Zone would be my best bet at a longer pattern with carrydown.  I would move to the left as far as I could to get the best head oil and least carrydown, in other words don't play the same line as everyone else and try this.  If this doesn't work, then your other option is to play a more direct line as someone else suggested.  For me this might be standing with my right foot at right gutter (right hander) and throwing the ball over the three board at the targets (in other words to the right of the first arrow) with a more up the back release, really stay behind the ball and play direct.  Try these two methods and see what works best for you.

Good luck!
