Ultra Zone Impressions
« on: December 18, 2008, 04:00:49 AM »
I bowled in a couple of PBA Regionals in June and my ball reaction wasn't very good, mostly because I was really throwing it bad.  But a friend of mine suggested that I try a BW ball, so I took a look at a few on the BW website and decided to try an Ultra Zone and a Twisted Fury.  The layout is BW asymmetrical for fresher PBA shots with the pin under the ring and the MB @ 60 degrees.  Surface is at 1000 abralon w/ Magic Shine Polish.

The Ultra Zone with this layout is probably the ultimate ball to play out with, it picks up really early and is very smooth off the dry boards.  I can only judge it by one practice session right now because of how poorly I was throwing it before, but this ball will be great for playing outside, but carry will suffer if you have to move in with it.  I'm sure this is largely due to the layout and that higher pins and stronger mass bias positions would allow this ball to play further inside much easier.

I bowled in a center that has AMF HPL synthetics with a shot that's really walled up with a ton of friction to the outside part of the lane.  With most of my equipment, if I get it to the friction zone before 45 ft, it was going brooklyn from any angle.  This was true with my Rival, Momentum, Arch Rival, TRoad Pearl and Playmaker.  Not this ball, I was able to flatten out and play a 10-5 shot standing around 22-23 with a little more loft to get it thru the front a little cleaner, the breakpoint was the 5 board at around 35 ft.  It was crushing the hole from that outside angle and was the only ball I could even think about playing out with.   I've thrown it at some other centers and basically when I have a look from the outside angle with this ball, it's $$$$$$$.

In summary, this Ultra Zone is the ultimate ball for the outside angle,  if you have a shot from out, it's $$$$$.  The drawback is that it's not very versatile with this layout, but what it does, it does really, really well.

The Ultra is one of the most consistent reactions I have found when playing outside. I can't play as far out as the pearl reactives, but as long as I reach SOME friction the ball makes a strong turn to the pocket. The hybrid cover keeps that turn predictable, though.

Mine has been best with about 800 grit and then Snake Oil on it. If I bowl on higher friction surfaces I would probably need the base surface slightly smoother before adding the Snake Oil. Overall, this ball is a great match for me.

I should probably leave the UZ impressions to video games

i'm very impressed with my ultra zone. it's drilled with the pin next to the ring finger, the cg straight down and the psa right next to the thumbhole. there's a x-hole down near the right side of the thumbhole. more importantly, the ultra zone is finished with a 2,000 grit abralon pad and brunswick's factory finish high gloss polish. i get good length and plenty of backend pop whether i'm playing outside with little axis rotation or inside with a lot of axis rotation.
