Highly Polished Avalanche
« on: May 22, 2008, 01:39:15 AM »
I drilled a solid Avalanche a few weeks ago. One thing that surprised me was the high level of polish on it. I read that it is supposed to be Rough Buff OOB. I just checked a few Twisted's that are in the shop and the Twisted's are much more muted polish wise.

Has anyone else seen this?? The shop ordered 50 of the Avalanches and they are all pretty highly polished. Could the factory have finished the solids like the Avalanche pearls???

I guess it's always possible, but all of the Avalanches we've sold have been shiny, but looks can be deceiving depending on the cover stock, color, etc.
I actually like my Avalanche solid at 2000 abralon. It definitely made that ball more versatile and smooth.

I have noticed slight variations on any ball regardless of manufacturer. Maybe when "ball A" was finished the abralon pads were newer than "ball B", so when the polish is applied you'll see some that appear less shiny even though the same process was used.

FWIW, I re-did the Rough Buff finish on my Av Solid by taking it back down to 220 on six sides, applying Rough Buff on two sides and buffing the other four, and it came out just as shiny as the original box finish.

I forgot who told me, but after the initial batch all of the Avalanches were polished.  I figure it is because the strength of the coverstock is a bit deceiving for a low end bowling ball.
I suggest taking the polish off (somewhere between 1k-2k abralon should do).
Personally I am not a big fan of polish on Big B stuff.  Only the Red Zone and Fury liked gloss, and everything else has been far more effective at a medium-smooth matte finish.

Yes the first batch was dull, but they all come rough buff now. It's all about shelf appeal. The shiny ball always sells more than the dull ball(Unless you want a sponge).

Don't be afraid to touch the cover. Drill it the way you want and if the reaction isn't there, hit it with an abralon pad. Brunswick has been preaching this for a long time, and they published a paper on bringing covers back to box.
