Oldie but Goodie.....Phantom
« on: January 16, 2019, 04:11:20 PM »
Had league play this morning but my "Go-To" piece was in the shop being resurfaced so I had to replace it with something similar but useable on heavy oil.

We normally bowl on a medium-heavy shot, but for some reason today this shot played extremely heavy. In practice, I rolled an older particle Silver Streak, just so I could get a read on the lanes. The ball never hooked....it just went straight!!

I pulled out my dusky, gray matted Phantom and the ball read the mids and rolled on the backend. It came back to me from the ball return, absolutely glistening from all the oil it had picked up. After giving it a real good wipe off, I proceeded to shoot three down and in games of 216-194-186. Nothing to write home about but this ball is extremely consistent; dependable; and gives you a great roll on the backend!

When it does hit the pocket and carry.........you definitely know it! This was my second time using this piece since it had been given to me about a year ago! This ball is a keeper for sure! it's not flashy but it is very dependable!

Considering I was able to shoot three games with only two opens, I'd say this ball is worth it's weight for sure! I'll have to add it into my arsenal right now due to its dependability! Not bad Brunswick!

Some days you're the bug....some days you're the windshield...that's bowling!

I now have more decade plus old Big B balls than new ones.  They were really lapping the field back then plus those older balls are better than most newer stuff on todays house shot imo.  Thought about going back two decades plus and picking up a Rhino Pro but probably don't have the revs to use it as no wood lanes in the area.  Probably grab my Dad's old Rhino urethane at some point to use for my static weight experiment seeing as it has a pancake and its free and all.

Interesting, it depends on how the house shot plays and the types of bowling balls being compared. My home center's shot is 42 buffed to 44 feet. The volume is 22-23 ml but the backends play tight. The middle has a lot of oil but it burns up quickly. There is a little friction to the outside but there is little recovery playing an inside out line. I use a track out and lane shined (maroon pad) Danger Zone HPH and it kills the shot by reducing the handcuffed effect of the pattern that many bowlers see with shine. It has the early read similar to a Black Phantom in the fronts but it has a little of the classic Danger Zone hook/set motion on the backend. My pro shop operator thinks I am crazy throwing a high load particle with so much surface on a pattern that is not very heavy. Truthfully, the Danger Zone HPH is one of the very few higher load particles which does not need a flood even with an obscene 360 scotch brite grit. I actually skates a lot on true floods.

I have a Teal Rhino Pro at home that rolls really well for me. Last year, I subbed at a bowling center that had lower volume and around 38 ft. I was able to go to it after the Purple Hammer and really could have started with it if I didn't love the look I had with the Purple on the fresh.

There's a guy I bowled with (he's since retired) that would kill nearly every pattern we have in town using his Gold Rhino Pro. And I have to admit that for a 25+ year old ball now, it still looks good going down the lane. Yes, a bit darker than the IQ Tour Pearl, but still looks good.

This has me thinking of breaking into my storage unit, pulling out a Command Zone Arc and see how it and a Riot Zone roll now. I'm not much of a Brunswick fan at all, but those two matched up my game wonderfully 20 years ago.

Speaking of oldies, I was 9 when I had it, but could someone remind me what the cover was for a Black Beauty? Poly, Urethane, Plastic? I don't know, but in my defense I was 9 and really didn't care, I just wanted to bowl at the time!

black beauty was rubber. I shot 247 with my dads black diamond playing up 10. its in between plastic and urethane as far as hook but much closer to urethane. my PSO told me that rubber balls don't absorb oil at all, so that's something to think on too.
can i AXE you a question

+1 on rubber being stronger than plastic on modern conditions.  My dads magicline moves more than I expected. Stinks its 14lb though.  Very predictable. Maybe pick up a heavier LT48 someday.

Not too many years ago I shot a 299 with an original Gold Rhino Pro. Still
my highest game. I bought the remake when it came out and it was a dud.

This thread reminds me I still have an original Danger Zone in my garage waiting to be plugged and redrilled. Thanks!

If its the original DZ with metal nugget in the core might make sure core hasn't separated before drilling first.  Heard that is a problem with those balls.  Big reason why was ok with the remake (not vintage though) without the nugget even though may lose a little hitting power.
