Original inferno question
« on: January 13, 2006, 03:48:08 PM »
The pro shop I go to have a few original infernos left. He mentioned to me that they are one inch pins. If I buy one of them and get it drilled, what should I expect out of a one inch pin with this kind of ball? I'm a stroker with 13-15 mph ball speed at the rack and low/medium revs.

I'm asking since I haven't really seen the original inferno in action.

One inch pins tend to roll earlier.. long pins get more length.

Make sure you are not a high track player, or you might roll over your finger holes.

I would try a length or simple 3 oclocl drill pattern.

Unfortunately I am a high track player and I have been known to clip the thumbhole at times. Will the one inch pin make it worse for a high track player like myself?  I don't think I've rolled over the finger holes before.

Beware, this is long, but may help you.
I have a pretty dang High track.  were talking 1/4-1/2 inch away from the fingers and thumb.  I've owned 3 pin in bowling balls within the last few years, loved 2 of em, and the verdict is still out on the Pin in Original inferno that I have.  Had a Columbia Rock, put the pin above and to the right of the fingers a little ways, with the CG smack dab on top of the pin.  Amazingly didn't need a weighthole.  Ball rolled great, It actually got pretty good length for a particle, fairly snappy move, and carried just as well as any other ball I had.

not too long ago Got a Columbia 300 Wild, drilled it with pin Right below the fingers, right around 1/4 inch away from both fingers. and the CG is about a half inch Directly below that.  AMAZING ball, its hard to describe the way it rolled, It read the lanes and just rolled however it needed to in order to score.  Good length most of the time.  but still look at the core and coverstock.  it is completely and 100% the best carrying ball I have ever rolled to date, I tripped more 4 pins and 10 pins out with this ball than I have with any thing else.

and finally the ball I think your most interested in,  I just recently got an OI with a 1 inch pin (even though I could have gotten one with a larger pin), I contemplated how to drill it,  I had no knowledge as to how to drill a pin in ball except for how my others were drilled.  After a few days of coming on here and talking to drillers in my area, I decided to lay it out about like my Rock was.  Pin at a 45 degree angle from my ring finger and CG 1 inch (go figure) below that weight hole had to be added on this one,  took out 3/8 oz. with the weight hole 4" right and 1/4" up from the center of palm (can't remember exactly where that is from my PAP).  The drill broke before we had a chance to put the weight hole in so I got to use the ball for a little bit with 1 and 1/4 ounces of side weight.  Ball went real long, longer than my Wired with a 5 inch pin, drilled pin over fingers CG kicked, and after going that far, just made a left turn.  It was almost uncontrollable.  I think part of it was the High Gloss finish on the ball.  got OK carry but nothing to brag about.  after taking the 3/8 oz side weight out of the ball, it had a much tamer backend (don't get me wrong, still snappy).  Carry is good with it And it is actually the hardest hooking ball I use right now (currently thinking about getting a Visionary AMB Solid).  Wired is the next step down from the OI.  Clears the heads well, and almost always recovers on the backends, even when there is a little bit of carrydown.

Well now that that Novel is done, on to the next!!!
Hope this helped you,  If I had it to do over again, I would still definitely get that inferno.  Good luck to you.

DONT DRILL A 1" pin if you are a high track player.. I am a high track player and all my balls a 4" pin outs.. period.. end of story

It is a well know fact that when you are a high track player, you need a long pin, and place it above the finger holes.. so that when it rolls the bow tie is next to your middle finger, due to your pap and then pin allinging as they balls turns.... This pin out will make you clip your holes... a 1" pin will not work for u.  period...

Tonx ... I am currenlty being trained in drilling by a proffesional ... the cg maters totaly to ball reaction...  If you dont know what the hell you are talking about.. shut the f#ck up

So, I should pass up on the Original Inferno with the 1" pin? I've got a Paradigm with a 2" pin and an Eraser blaze with a 1" pin as well. I've noticed that the shorter pins hook up for me early on the lane and are more versatile.

My Smokin Inferno is about 3 3/4" pin and I can only use that in the second and third game of my second shift league.

cranking_inferno: you need to watch the brunswick video published in response
to the USBC proposed GG w/in 1" of grip center rule.

I picked up the Original Inferno today. I got to throw about six games on it with it. I got the ball drilled somewhere between 1E and 2E like I asked.

Compared to the Smokin Inferno, they are like night and day.

Actually this Inferno with the one inch pin reacted like my recharge that I had. It gave me a nice even arc to the pocket. No snap, barely any backend. It looks like I got a control ball out of it, which isn't bad and it is what I expected it to be.

I just got done cleaning the ball. Good news is, I don't track over the fingers. I do clip the thumb howerver, and that is true for every ball I've ever thrown.

One thing that stood out was after only six games, I'm starting to see track marks already. I sure hope it is the lane. My smokin inferno has very few track marks as does my Paradigm. I have a ball spinner in case I need to resurface anything, but still, I sure hope that the OI coverstock is not a softie? is it?

I'd also like to know what to do and what to use when I have to resurface either my Smokin or Original Infernos.

Crank' In'
A pin-in ball does NOT make you any more likely to roll over tha fingers than a pin-out, it is all about where you place the pin that determines whether you are going to flare over the fingers or not.
Just because it is a pin in doesn't mean that he has to drill it with a low and strong pin placement, that may cause it to flare over the fingers, all he has to do is either use a weaker p2p placement or drill the fingers deeper/drill a higher balance hole if placing the pin up .
I am a high tracker and I have NEVER rolled over the finger holes with a pin-in or pin-out ball, even with lower pins. I just have to be sensible with the pin strength if placing the pin low (5"+ p2p).
