Question for Big "B" gurus!
« on: November 05, 2008, 08:45:49 AM »
I am looking for a little more length and backend than all my early rolling and smooth balls. I don't generally like pearl covers. I seem to have a little trouble getting the same breakpoint consistently. I have tried several, with little success. Now I just picked up a Radical Inferno with my span and pitches.
The pin is over ring finger and cg in middle of span. OOB surface. Now finally to the question. Would this tend to go fairly deep and have some backend. Is this a good ball for what I am trying to do, and is this the proper drill to start with.
Thanks in advance for any help you might offer.

Please, just one more ball, surely it has a 900 in it.

It's a good start, but you're probably going to want to change the cover.  Not sure to what, but OOB the Radical is kind of an ice skate.

"I am looking for a little more length and backend than all my early rolling and smooth balls. I don't generally like pearl covers."

This is what pearl covers do.

"Now I just picked up a Radical Inferno with my span and pitches.

It all depends on how much oil is on the lanes. For fresher conditions you might try about 2000 abralon on the Radical surface.

"Is this a good ball for what I am trying to do, and is this the proper drill to start with."

There are lots of variables such as lane surface, amount of oil and where, bowler's ball speed and rev rate, axis tilt, and so on...

My advice is to start with the ball at 2000 and go from there. The Radical with high gloss finish was rather skid/snappy so getting "deep" may have the ball go too long before turning towards the pocket (see above variables).

You'll just have to experiment with the ball and the surface until you find a good match. One of my good friends still uses his Radical around 15 board and swings it out from there and back. His ball speed isn't real fast, and his is not super high gloss polish, either, but it's his favorite ball.

Thanks notclay
I know there are a lot of variables to get "the definitive" answer but I am grateful for your help and I will try 2000 and a little polish today in league this afternoon.

If you opt for polish don't have the surface at 2000 or your ball may go too long. I like polish after the ball is around 1000 for lots of length, but usually I'm at around 500 before I add the polish.

So, 2000 without polish, or something more coarse with polish.
