flare and the Speed Demon Zone
« on: April 04, 2009, 05:47:53 PM »
I bought a pretty much new Speed Demon Zone a while back as that used to be one of my favorite balls back in the day (scored my first 279 at 17 with it), but now it's obviously a pretty light oil ball. I bowl Thursday nights at the local place because it's a dollar per game, and depending on when I get there and who I follow I might find heavy oil to reverse block, always a challenge. In this case I was finding a burnt up track with carry down so I wasn't having much luck except playing deep around the 4th arrow with little swing. That's when I came up with the idea of piping the SDZ up the outside, and it worked pretty well actually, but when I got the ball back I could not believe the flare...I had flare rings over the ENTIRE BALL. Flare unlike I had ever seen on any ball I'd ever owned...on my Awesome Revs I might see 7 or 8 but nothing like this.

What I'm wanting to know is if there's a logical explanation for this, because I didn't all of a sudden turn into Belmonte or Robert Smith when I throw this ball...it does seem to be a low RG core with a mild coverstock, so maybe in its shined state it just never rolls out and keeps rotating the whole way down the lane, I don't know. I'm very tempted to take the shine off this ball and see what it could do...

The Speed Demon wasn't a low RG but more medium-high.It was intended for what you used it for. Well, back in its day, more for medium-light oil. Its RG differential was on the high side, .055", for Brunswick. If you drilled its pin in a strong-ish position, you can get as much as 7" of flare or more.

Here are some refereces on it:

Medium-high RG, eh? Wow, because to me this ball revs off the hand more similar to an Absolute Inferno than a Punisher.

The pin is pretty strong...I don't know my PAP exactly, nor the pin to cg length (I cannot find a CG marking on this ball at all!), but the pin is a little below and to the right of my ring finger, so that should be pretty strong right? I drill most of my stuff pin up but this is the way the ball came, essentially.

If I recall correctly, around 2.55, maybe a little higher. It's been a long time. It was a go-long ball.

You were throwing it on dry and it does flare a lot.

This was my main ball for a long time so I've seen it on a lot more than dry
