Urethane Avalanche or Sling Shot
« on: July 17, 2010, 04:48:09 AM »
I'm looking for suggestions on which to get for shorter oil, I want to be able to play more up the boards especially later in the shift. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I have the Natural not the Avalanche
and just picked up a Slingshot to use shorter oil
Ball works well and likes hand which is unusual for later shifts for me

You can't go wrong with either. But for most nights the Slingshot with a pin down layout should be the choice. Mine is quite good that way. It's likely to be useable more often for MOST bowlers. By going pin down it's just more predictable, especially late on the lane.

The Urethane Avalanche probably isn't the "everyday" ball, but will save your life if the lanes get real toasty. It does seem to carry better than the solid urethane covered balls, which need a little more oil in order to consistently carry corner pins. This isn't a knock against any other company's ball, it's just one of the differences between a solid urethane and a pearl urethane.

I have the Slingshot drilled but haven't yet had time to drill my Avalanche Urethane. Love the SS for very light oil.

Interestingly, BTM gave the Slingshot a 41 for overall hook and an 18 for length, while it gave the AU a 42 for overall hook and a 17 for length.
Torque: 5.5 for the SlingShot, 5.0 for the AU.
Backend for both was a 13.
Heavy, Medium and Dry oil for all 3 bowlers were so close as to be the same for all practical purposes.
So basically the Urethane hooks slightly earlier and slightly more, emphasis on "SLIGHTLY", "VERY SLIGHTLY".

Dewey,
For me, I have to agree with what BTM said.  My AU actually hooked a little more and a little earlier than my SS.  I definitely get more use out of my SS.  But, both balls are good when the pattern blows up.

Thanks,

Hey guys thanks for the replies, sounds like the Sling Shot is what I should be picking up as soon as the nationals checks are out .
