Clue me in when to use particle vs reactive
« on: November 11, 2004, 02:35:15 AM »
OK so I've got a Columbia Bully and a Track Animal.  One reactive, one particle reactive.  Give me a preferred lane condition for each and maybe how I could tell when it is time to switch.

I know they are both for heavier oil, that's not the question.  I'm talking about the back end, carry down etc that kinda thing.  Or anything else any of you seasoned veterans have learned over the years.

Thanks in advance.

wrong forum, but i'll see what I can do.

First you must understand the characterstics of the coverstocks.  A reactive ball is made to skid more in oil and be sharper in dry, while particle is made to control in oil and be smoother off the dry.  On anything that you are looking for more control, the particle is usually the better choice.  Such as when the pattern is flatter and you need something not so sharp in the back.  Reactive is better for when you need the ball to skid more down the lane and make a sharper turn.  As far as carry down, I think alot of it depends on the surface and where you are on the lane.  If you can still get the ball through the front part of the lane clean, then particle would probobly be the better choice because it will still control in the oil that is down lane, but if you need a ball that will get through the front and make the turn to cut through the oil then reactive.  Probobly a pretty broad answer, but different things work for different bowlers.  Try talking to someone who's a knowledgeable bowler in your center like during your league so they can see what you are talking about.

In general, particle vs resin is more like smoother vs flippier, BUT, and this is a big "BuT", there are so many
- different loads of particles,
- different polishes levels of particle, resin, particle pearls, resin pearls,
- different grit/sanding levels of the same ball coverstocks,
- asymmetric cores throw another level of complexity into the mix,

that it is no longer possible nor correct to draw conclusions based on whether the ball is particle or resin anymore. All other factors, some of which I specified above, must be taken into account.
Life in bowling is no longer simple and straightforward.
The ball itself must be judged, not simply on its core, and not simply on its cover.

As an example that proves the rule, there are now particle balls, like the Scamp,

which skids more and hooks less than almost any resin ball, and there are solid resins, like the Rule,
http://www.ballreviews.com/Reviews/Reviews.asp?ManufacterID=12&BallID=552
that hook earlier and more than most particles now on the market.
