Polishing a Strike Zone
« on: February 11, 2008, 05:21:56 AM »
I have a Strike Zone that is drilled pretty strong and at it's OOB 800 grit, it's not too usable. Has anyone tried polishing one? What differences did you notice? I was also looking at 2000 abralon, but don't know how much that would differ from 800 wet sand.

Basically if you polish it, then you would have a Red Zone....except it wouldn't be red...

I've had two Strike Zones, and I threw them at every surface prep imaginable.  At 2000 smooth, it was cleaner in front and had a harder arc in back.  Polished, it was much pushier, and significantly sharper at the break.

Also, IME, a polished Strike Zone isn't quite a Red Zone.  At one time I had both balls drilled identically (5" under by 60 degrees, XH on PAP), and with both polished, the Strike Zone was a few feet longer and somewhat stronger at the break.

Sort of a Re Zone but blue!

Thanks for all the input. I decided to give it a go polished. I can always take it back down if I don't like what I see.

I had mine at 1000+Bwick factory shine and it was a great smooth ball.  Anytime I wanted to play right of 15 the shine got me through the front and middle and is hard arced in the back.  Great ball, much smoother than my oob Red zone w/ similar drill.

I have my SZ at 2000 abralon, no polish.  It is a readable roll and strong hard arcing reaction (drilled axis/leverage).

I threw it out of box, but didn't like the early roll and weak hitting, it was buring up due to my rev rate and lane condition.

Took it to 2000 and it is a beast, it can handle moderate carry down and still glide through the heads.

Huge difference from 2000 vs 800 OOB.  Try that before you polish it, you can always polish it later.
