For PBA ball of the year, Mr. Benoit's logic is easily understandable. For the average user's ball of the year, it is less clear.

Why would you think a particle pearl ball would be a better all around choice??

Particle pearls are usually very versatile, especially low-load ones.  Some bite in oil to give a smooth reaction with lots of midlane, pearl (and some polish) to help it get through the heads even at the end of the night.  Pearl reactives, usually polished, can be kinda squirty, over/under (I know the VZ/AI and CZ/OI are hardly typical pearl reactives).

A solid reactive would probably be just as versatile as the particle pearl, but there aren't any solids in the medium or medium-heavy lineup besides the Nemesis (which is supposed to be very versatile as well).  But the Nemesis is an older ball, almost last year's ball.  You can hardly give it ball-of-the-year honors now.
