Rough Buff on a OI??
« on: December 03, 2005, 06:05:53 AM »
Ok, never really was a Brunswick fan but maybe you guys can change me.  I'm considering buying an AI but was recently offered and OI for pretty cheap.  The hardest hooking ball I currently have is my Columbia Wired, pearlized and just does not hook on much above a little bit heavier medium pattern.  My friend had bought an OI when they first came out and when I compared them side by side the OI was very similar as far as overall hook as my Wired.  its just that my Wired was more angular.  Now with all that aside, the real question, If I were to take an NIB OI and hit it with the ruff buff polish would it essentially be the same ball (or close to) as the AI?  I know that the AI has the Activator+ coverstock and the OI only has the regular Activator, but is there really that much of a difference?  And the numbers as far as RG and Diff are exactly the same.  So what do you think?  Could I turn an OI into an AI?  Thanks.

Probably not, Activator+ is defintiely stronger than the original Activator.
PLUS the AI has a 220 grit before Rough Buff is applied. I think you can get close if you do the same procedure to an OI, but the AI will still be stronger. Overall, I think it's a good idea. The OI, so treated, might be 1/2 or so of a notch below the AI in oil handling.

thanks Charlest, Anybody else have any opinions?  Also If I were to just take the OI and but the ruff buff polish on it immediately, would there be any adverse effects?  I know it won't hook nearly as much as if I were to take it down to 220 first, but just curious?

Remember, even the Brunswick High Gloss polish's effect on a ball depends on what the grit is underneath. Unless you know from the seller what the grit is/was, it's probably safest to sand it to what you want before treating with either Brunswick product.

It's a NIB OI so not too worried about the previous grit

Jeremy

What was the original grit before polishing on the OI's anyway?

They were sanded to 400 before the High Gloss polish was applied.

400 grit is a reasonable base over which to apply Rough Buff. Remember that it smothes the ball a good amount.

alright, I think I'll just apply the rough buff right to the factory surface, then drill it up.  Thanks for all the help guys.  If it doesn't work I guess I can always adjust the cover some more.

brunswicks rough buff is basically a type of rubbing and finishing compound. before brunswick came out with their factory finish high gloss polish and rough buff their polished bowling balls came from the factory with 1 or 2 minutes on the trusty lustrekleen machine where a coating of rubbing and finishing compound was applied. rough buff will give you more length than a dull or smooth sanded ball but less length than a polished ball. rough buff will also make the backend reaction smoother as opposed to the skid-snap nature of reactive balls that are polished.
