different sounding strikes
« on: April 24, 2006, 07:21:53 AM »
I have a smokin and a SZ in my arsenal and everytime I get that nice loud strike I hear two different pitches between the two balls. The SZ has a much lower pitch when it strikes, like a low thunder roll. The smokin sounds like lightning hitting a tree. is there any explanation between the different pitches of a strike?

I agree, some balls obviously sound different. By the way, my Trauma makes a unique high clear sound when it hits.

I too have noticed different sounds with different ball.  I'm wondering if it may have to do with core shape? or Density?

I suppose it comes from two things:
- entry angle (a good hit will always result in a short and sharp pin noise, almost like an "implosion")
- coverstock prep and porousity

Remember: sound is another form of energy, or the ball's impact energy transmitted through the air.

I found that polished pearl balls have a much higher, "cracking" sound with a good pocket hit, while dull and especially particle stuff (I noticed this especially with Storm particles) makes a more muffled, thumping noise.

By the way, I can confirm Katel's experience with the Trauma. Loud ball!

Yeah, hard core material like titanium is supposed to reflect impact energy. Consequently, this is transmitted into air and sound, and hard core balls should be loud(er).
