Title: Smart Zone 1
Post by: Apero on October 18, 2019, 01:23:20 PM
I have the opportunity to buy a bowling ball(International Zone - Smart Zone 1). Not used. Not drilled. The ball was produced in 2003. Is it worth it?

Depends.  If it is activator shell, or even PK 18 with strong core might be good
Most of the domestic zones in that era were pretty good

Coverstock is SS Extreme reactive, an international cover.  At the time, it was designed as a ball for medium to medium-dry lanes.  These days it would probably work better for a later shift or light oil conditions.

Will the reactive surface of a 16-year-old ball work? I worry that she went bad for 16 years.

If it has been stored well (e .g. the ball kept in its OOB bag), old stuff can be "as good as new". I recently had a Storm Banshee from 2004 punched up, and I cannot tell any deficiencies.

Not even a problem! Them Zone balls from back in the day are TANKS!! I have about ten of them that I still use today! No worries!!

Nice pick up!

Also ,  Brunswick had more names for coverstocks back then than you could count.  I will bet the cover was actually PK 18, or a close derivative.

Main league ball is a Morich Mojave with a Brunswick cover stock first released over 20 years ago and the ball itself is over a decade old.  Older Brunswick stuff at least for me tends to be better than the new stuff on lighter house shot.
