Time for Big B to fess up...what the Hell is Powerkoil 22?
« on: July 31, 2005, 12:22:35 PM »
I've got one of these punched out and one that's NIB.  Powerkoil 18 is used in the Blueberry C/2 Buzzsaw along with countless other Brunswick based prodcuts.  I've always been under the impression that PK22 was nothing more than a PK18 based reactive coverstock that underwent a small name change when it was marketed overseas.

Until now.

The NIB BZ2 that I have still has the Brunswick drilling instruction/info sheet in the box.  I was just about to punch another one out when I noticed something that nearly floored me.  There it was.  In big, black lettering.  Right underneath the Bionic Zone 2 lettering on the sheet, "Low Particle".

(pausing for effect)

GASP!

How can this be?  All of the rumors and hype are false!?!  What's next?  Is there really a Santa?  A curve ball really DOESN'T curve?  The Apollo moon landings were all a hoax in a Santa Monica soundstage and nothing more than an effort to embezzle countless trillions of dollars of tax revenue?  At this rate, I'm not so quick to acknowledge that Old Style really might be better than Bud!  But, there in plain view, "Low Particle".  But wait, there's more.  Located not more than four inches away, under the "coverstock" heading, it lists Powerkoil 22 Reactive.  What the Hell is this?  Some kind of cheesy Abbott & Costello skit?  One more nugget of 411.  Under the "Reaction Characteristics" of the BZ2 and I quote, "The Bionic Zone 2 uses a medium RG asymmetrical core system combined with a PowerKoil22 based, solid color lowload particle coverstock."

So, it seems this is the John Kerry of bowling equipment.  It doesn't know what it is and Brunswick is as clear as mud with their attempt to let you know, as well.  Someone, anyone.  Please, before it's too late and somebody gets hurt.  Help!

Good luck buddy... the Brunswick staff that visit here seem to be in the dark for the most part when it comes to overseas R&D.

Brunswick has ever been confusing and not really helpful with the overseas coverstocks... this topic comes up every 2 weeks or so.

PK22 is not, as far as I know, a (light load) particle coverstock. I wish it would be, though. I think there have been mistakes when the Big B website staff made new pages for new overseas lass. They copied old pages, exchanged pictures and only made text adjustments. I think it was when the Dynamic Zones were replaced - and Dynmaic Zone II featured a low-load particle coverstock (with the Red Fuze core, which now popped up again in the Majestic Zone II...).

They made the mistake when the page for the Bionic Zone II was written - the low-load hint was forgotten in the copy. The ball desicption on the left bar, as well as on the comparison chart, states PK22 to be reactive.

Nevertheless, the Bionic Zone II must be a very good oil ball. Good length, despite being matte. I wish I had gotten my hands on one of these, as well as a Smart Zone I for dryer conditions...

I've posted this before but here it is again.

PK22 is similar to PK18, they are in the same family.  Pk22 is reactive. The reference to "low load particle" in the spec sheet was a misprint.

Sorry for any confusion.  Hope this helps clear the air.

OK, do a quick search for PowerKoil 22 or PK22, much like I did, and see how the search ends up.  Plus, please tell me how that ONE thread answers the question that I posted?  If ya' got nothing worth while to say.....

Hey Dizzy, I have the Bionic Zone II and the Smart Zone 1 and like both.  I prefer is the Smart Zone 1 though, I like polished more than dull balls. They work great for me, though I need to repolish my Smart Zone before leagues start this fall.

4X4, it's always been my understanding that PK22 was a PK18 derivative. However, as soon as I read that(Low Particle) on the drill sheet, I thought I'd throw out the ballreviews.com help beacon.  Whenever you have contradictory information on the very drill sheet from the ball that you're punching out, you tend to wonder, "Am I making the right choice of drilling technique?".

I wasn't busting your balls, just saying that had you asked I would of been able to answer your questions.  It is a good ball though, good luck with it.

I hear ya' brotha'.  I was a little on the fiesty side when I was accused of not performing a simple search before posting this topic.  I, in fact, did search last night before posting this thread.  The topic that was covered in the other thread did not answer my post.  It seems if someone has something to say, intelligent or not, it's blurted out before any thought is put towards the topic at hand.  In the future, I'll do everything in my power not to clog the bandwidth of this site with such idiotic questions.
