Ultra Zone is too uncontrolable....
« on: May 01, 2008, 01:28:01 PM »
So I picked up a Ultra Zone. Pin under ring (Short 1 inch pin), MB about 45. No X-hole. The ball is in box surface as well. The ball is just too skid-flip.

The ball has no midlane read at all, just skid....then it bounces off any dry it finds. I thought this was suppose to be a rolly alternative to the twisted ?

Wheres the usual Brunswick midlane read ?

Glad I didnt buy the twisted !

Not too familiar with the Brunswick line, but any other ball I have had that gave me the kind of reaction you are talking about I always just took a scotch brite and knocked off the polish...

Well my stats are in my profile.

I'd say the pin is about 5 inch from axis. I'm wishing I would have put the pin over my middle and put the MB on my VAL.

Chris I dont know where your getting the twisted is the smoothest ball in your bag, youo should have seen the 2 that were thrown on my pair last night. Smooth was not the way to describe them for sure !

Heres the qoute from Brunswicks website about the Ultra:

Ultra-low-RG’s are known for strong mid-lane recovery moves and their controllable back-end hooking action, Brunswick has created an "mid-lane recovery" counterpart to the Twisted Fury that will match-up better on lane patterns that create over/under reaction problems for skid/snap balls.

Why does the Ultra do exactly the oppisite ?

My Ultra is super smooth and I drilled mine 5.5" pin high at 60 degree.

Maybe it has more to do with your lane surface? Heavy oil up front with uber dry back ends will make any ball kick off the dry.

My bet would also be on the lane condition at hand - I'd guess that there is too little/too short oil out there, esp. with the pin under fingers setup. The UZ goes down the lane, sniffs something dry, gets hold and goes off, jerking at the break point, probably even rolling out.

I have this symptom with my old Fuze Eliminator, which is a smooth particle ball, drilled for early hook and roll (pin to PAP 4", CG at about 45-60°). If I use it on too little oil, it looks as if the ball had a surprisingly sharp breakpoint - but in fact it is the end of the oil which comes too early for the ball. It is almost like a boat throwing an anchor.

I've been using it on just the regular well oiled THS. About 3 year old Brunswick Anvil. 40ft shot, outside of 5 is out of bounds.

The ball is pleanty strong as it is, so I didnt really want to bring the surface down and turn it into a oil ball.

I will say, the ball has great pin carry. just not the reaction I was expecting. maybe I'll try 1500 or 2000 grit on it.

302efi,

You're on the right track there. Always change surface in stages so your read on the lane will be more accurate. However, take it down to 1000 first, then bring it up to 1500 or 2000 if you wish.

By taking it down to 1000 first you've got a better chance of removing all of the polish from the pores. Adjusting the surface should even out the reaction quite a bit. Good luck.

For future reference, if you want a smoother midlane read, try pin under the fingers and maybe 4" from PAP.

Mine flips hard on fresh, but I expect that with my drilling. Pin 1in above ring finger, psa about an inch from thumb. Roughly 4.5x5, it still reads late flips and heads for he pocket. I could adjust the surface but I like the look it gives me.
