Groove Urethane Question
« on: February 04, 2009, 04:04:12 PM »
I just ordered a Groove Urethane from bowlingball.com, I am looking for a ball for dry lanes or even medium/dry, I am a high rev bowler (2 handed). I was wondering how everyone has liked this ball and what I can expect from it, also for those people that have the ball, how do you all have it drilled and what does it do? I have never thrown a Urethane ball so no clue what to expect, I plan on being able to play straight up the lane around 10-5 hard and straight with it.

Thanks

A friend of mine bought the 2 tone blue sanded Groove as a spare ball. Ball was drilled label, he plays rather slow with good revs. At OOB, the ball proved to be pretty strong - it even handled medium conditions, and for a spare ball it was too strong, except when flattening out the release for zero reaction. Very smooth, though, typical urethane look.
Due to the pancake core, the ball lacked end roll and some steam in the pocket, so the ball did not earn much love and has only seen a short period of use.

Mine is 5 x 5 stacked and pin down. OOB for me this thing rolled at 30 ft and hooked about 5 boards to the pocket. So i took the cover to 4000 abralon and now hit it with brunswick polish. I too have a lot of rotation and it makes a great spare ball with a little more traction than a plastic ball so it doesn't slide out in the oil. I have yet to hit the dry lanes i need to get a good review of this ball but the above reaction was on a fair amount of oil. That is why i adjusted the cover the way i did. Hope this helped!

I am currently using mine as a spare ball. 5" pin to pap below fingers. I brought the surface up to 2000 abralon. I found with polish it would snap too much so I like a smooth surface.

I really like to use this ball on the short FIQ patterns, 34', and playing the twig when the gutter is dry. On regular house shots I'll use up to date equipment, but on burnt up dry stuff this ball is great for me.

Thanks for the info guys.

Do you all think it will make for a good dry lane ball for a high rev guy?

I usually throw highly polished equipment to get the length I need out of balls, so Im assuming I wont have to knock the polish off of it. But Im sure that will be seen after I throw the ball.

Just debating how I want to drill it, probably am going to have to go with something with a longer pin to PAP to have the ball save the energy for the backend. Looking for a smooth arcing ball on the backend and it seems like I have found it. I can make my BWC hook from 1-2 to the pocket and carry on a medium shot so getting it to carry shouldnt be much of a problem.

I bought mine about a year ago to use as a multi-purpose spare/dry lane ball, so for me it's two (and sometimes three) balls in one. Mine has a one inch pin. You can see the layout on the link below, along with the rest of my arsenal.

http://www.putfile.com/album/182521/?action=slideshow

I throw Storm, but they don't have a pure urethane ball, so I went with the Groove. The ball was too strong for my needs OOB, so I polished it to 1500 grit. Even with it being urethane and a pancake core, it can still move on the right condition. I've even missed 10-pin spares to the left with this ball, but when I thought it was going in the gutter, it hooks up at just the right point to take out the 10, so that evens it out, lol.

It is a condition-specific ball, which is what I was looking for. One thing I've noticed is this ball hits like a Mack truck. Haven't seen anything like it, urethane-wise, since the original Hammers back in the day. My only problem is lack of confidence using this ball when the lanes break down. Urethane isn't forgiving, so it's also a good training ball to keep you accurate and honest.

Overall I'm satisfied. I was looking for a pure urethane ball and I got exactly what I wanted. So instead of carrying 5 balls, I carry 3. This is my first Big B since I bought a used Rhino Pro Teal back in the day, which was the worst ball I ever owned. Never bought Big B again until the Urethane Groove last year. I like it so much, I'm considering buying more Big B stuff in the future.

Enjoy your Groove, I think you'll like it.

Devaney had been using one on tour for late in the blocks. Is that high rev enough for you??

Thanks guys, definately sounds like what I am looking for and will make for a good dry lane ball. Seems to be exactly what I'm looking for, I got mine with a 3-4" pin so I can put more of a lengthly drill on it.
