What ball in the current Brunswick lineup would be closest to the black Versamax

The Fanatic uses the same core

Polish the Fanatic SS and I think you would get really close.

It's been a few years since I was on Brunswick's staff but I doubt the SS will be close. The Versa Max had a VERY clean cover as well as a high RG.  It was a perfect combination which allowed it to be so versatile.  Dull it still didn't hook too early and polished  you could open up the lane without too much over/under.

Looking at the SS, it has a much lower RG and I assume a stronger cover.  The Melee Cross had similar characteristics and hooked early when the heads blew.

It would seem the original Fanatic may be close, depending upon the cover, since they have the same core.

I took the cover of a Fanatic to 3000 and got the same look as my Versamax just a touch stronger. Also took a Fanatic down to 1000 grit and it turned into one of the best balls I have thrown in a long time. If you haven't tried one you are missing out on a great ball
