Want to improve my average!
« on: October 20, 2007, 06:49:27 AM »
I have been bowling since 9th grade in High School till about my Junior Year in college.  My average has progessively gotten better and better every season.  Starting at 123 now I am at 193.  I have been averaging in the 190's range for about 2 and a half years now on THS.  I know I can get into the 200's but it seems that I am lacking in some area I do not know.  I am a pretty accurate spare shooter besides the 10 pin that gives me some trouble.  Any advice would be good, thanks everyone!

A good COACH would not hurt! I've heard said that a LANE 1 ball helps the average. Perhaps  trying both will take you in the right direction! Good luck !!

I agree with the coach. You may feel like you are doing things right but a coach might point the smallest of things out that may make things click so much better. I was at that point a few years ago had my former boss coach me a little and since then my average has increased every year or stayed the same. Also to one other thing that I think helps is getting a good pro shop guy to help you with your equipment.

I have been coached before and the techniques have helped bring my average up 10 points from my last year average of 184.  The most helpful was Norm Duke that advice I will never forget.  It seems I have overly fast feet from what I got from  the advice from that clinic.

Just grind out that 10-pin.

Seeing your average, i think you don't miss the pocket terribly too many times in a game, so toppling all those corner pins will add a little to your average, and strive to convert all the other easy spares that you feel like you are leaving a lot.

Also, every time someone says they're good at other spares but the 10-pin is causing struggle, my head automatically says "hooking it on spares". Especially on more difficult patterns (sport shots and PBA patterns), hooking the ball on spare conversions will just cause headache and more of unnecessary thinking about the oil pattern. It's hard enough to have to figure out an efficient strike line, don't cause yourself more problems by figuring out tons of spare lines.

And even if you're not hooking it on spare shots, the straight spare shot is always something we can work on, since we'll never convert every spare and we surely will be shooting other than 300's. So just grind out your spares and your average will jump up to the 200 range.

WOuld have to agree with the coach idea. But one thing is that you have to be open to what they are going to say to you.

You can go to BOWL.com and find a coach in the area that you are in and schedule a lesson or two.

Getting a new ball is great, but not always the answer. Get a coach and see what they have to say. They might have a little adjustment that will help you topple the corner pins.

I have a coach already and I am very respectful of his advice.  I think its just that I need to learn how to read the lanes better.  I should perhaps shoot for my spares with a straight ball.

I had a lesson with Mike Jasnau at Lane 81 in May. I can tell you i have had very limited coaching. I'm 42 yrs old and have averaged 200-206 the last 3 years. I learned more in that 1 1/2 hour session than i ever expected! Mike found a few flaws in my delivery and his video equipment confirmed it. He gave me several key drills to do and WOW has it made a difference! It really just clicked. Since i only bowl one night a week (and basically took the summer off) it took a little longer to get the changes to "take hold". My average had raised to 215 in my regular league night and have subbed in another a few weeks and have 221 on that night. I can't tell you how much confidence you can get when you get a "repeatable swing". If you can get to where Mike is i would definitely do it! Good luck with your game!

hey there,

well.. im currently a 175 avg bowler, usually a 180+ avg bowler, i've had a bad couple of weeks starting league, but i'll get back up there..  i agree with the others.. i would do the following..

1.  get a coach.
2.  increase your single and 2 pin spare conversion percentage.
3.  diffently look at the pba on sundays, was well as the women.. you can pickup tons of help that way.
4.  they say that an increase in ball speed can help carry many of those pocket shots that don't seem to carry those pesky 10 pins. (ex. liz johnson throwing it 20+ mph on her way to winning the open)
5.  look at how your ball enters the pocket.
6.  try different angles and layouts.

not knowing how you throw the ball or what your characteristics are try different lines.  look at walter ray, liz johnson, parker bohn, they're great down and in players.  there's a good article in usbc bowler that there are a lot of times down and in is the best.  sure tommy jones may have more revs and have a little more to get more messengers and it does look flashy, but straighter is greater..

someone suggested you get a lane 1, that may help, but then again there are alot of bowlers that bowl with all mfgs and have pretty good averages.  so lastly, increase your spare conversions percentage and you can't help but increase your average.  the strikes will come.

hope this helps.

keep it between the gutters..

FRONTIERS2 .. Excellent suggestions .. although my comment on LANE 1 ball was meant to get a laugh .. too many have taking it serious .. I think your recommendations should at least be considered!
