Question about drilling Total Inferno
« on: December 16, 2006, 02:38:34 PM »
I bowl on medium heavy oil on synthetics, 39 ft house shot.  Usually solid reactive equipment is my best bet at this house, but I wanted something that could still handle the oil I see and yet be good when the lanes transition.  I need the maximum recovery I can get from this ball without being too lengthy.

Therefore I have decided that I want to do the 2E layout on my Total Inferno, which dictates a 4 1/2" pin-to-PAP with pin under ring finger.  The layout sheet specifies a 0-2" pin-out for most bowlers.  I think this will give me what I am looking for in my situation: the most possible area coverage while still getting an early read.

Specs on my ball:
15lb 2oz
3" pin (remember, my layout specified 0-2")
2.6 TW

Now the question: If I put the pin under the RF, at 4 1/2 pin to PAP, because of the 3" pin out, will I get the intended reaction?

Will the intended reaction be affected because of having thumb weight with the pin under RF?  Will it start up TOO early and have nothing left for the backend, or is this no big deal?  Should I consider something else?

My driller definitely knows the hows and whys, but is a doer, not a teacher, so he isn't very good at explaining them.  My stats are in my profile.  Any help would be appreciated.

You can do that layout just fine.  Put the weight hole on a line from the center of grip, thru the cg on the val.  That would equally remove thumb and side weight.

Andrew, thanks for the response.  I had considered putting a weighthole after the original drilling- I would throw it first before adding an extra hole.

Assuming I don't put a weight hole there (or anywhere), and leave the ball with around 3/4 side as recommended and however much thumb it turns out to be, what should I expect in that case?

dont forget about the "Super Ultra Low RG"

putting the Pin over the fingers is still going to roll earlier than most balls.

if you want something rolly to play in the middle, i'd say 5" Pin to PAP under the bridge, if you're looking for length and smoothness, go over the bridge.

i wouldnt go too close to leverage, it may roll out on your more than you want.

becoming a condition specific door stop you'll most likely leave out of your bag.

MegaMav, good point about the super low RG.  I forgot about that momentarily.  However, I remember now that the low RG was one of the reasons I chose this ball, because my natural style is such that I almost never have trouble having equipment roll out.

The tendency if I am going to have a problem is throwing the ball through the breakpoint as opposed to roll out, so while I don't want to go leverage, I feel like the 4 1/2 pin to PAP is a good match.

For me, rolly is good; I just want to maximize the recovery to go with that rolliness if possible.  An example of this is my Solid Uranium: drilled label leverage, I get a great combination of midlane and backend reaction.  I am hoping my Total will fit between my SU/Scorchin' spot, and my Machine (5x3 pin over bridge).

If its legal after you drill it, then I'd just leave it.  It will have some thumb weight, which will make it read alittle earlier.

I drilled mine up yesterday.  I went with 5" pin to pap, only had a 2.5" pin, so i had TONS of finger, almost a full ounce.  I threw it for about a game & decided it was going just a touch too long, so i drilled the fingers deeper.  This ball ROLLS, on what i consider to be medium oil, this ball was getting into a roll about 20 ft down the lane, yet still had GREAT recovery off the dry.

After a few games with this ball, im REALLY liking it.  For a ball that gets into a roll this early, my TI hits like a freight train.

Hope this helps.
