looking for the right ball
« on: December 28, 2008, 05:42:05 AM »
I am going to purchase a new ball for tournament play. I am currently rolling a Absolute Inferno. The problem I am having is I get no backend form this ball unless the lanes are dry. I have a low rev and high speed (16 1/2 to 17). Any suggestions on a ball that will work for me. Also I am a down and in.

I would suggest maybe a maxx zone been hearing nothing but good things from that not a big backend ball but will dig in the oil.Maybe a Twisted fury solid i have one of those and love it so u would probably want one of those 2.

matt1,

How many games do you have on the Absolute since the oil has been extracted? If it's been over 60-80 games that reason alone could be your culprit, so don't give up on that ball. It's a favorite of many die hard Brunswick users. Have the oil extracted, a light resurface, and leave it around 2000-4000 abralon and you'll be surprised how good this ball can be as long as there are clean backends.

If you choose a ball with a much stronger cover, such as the Maxxx, you may need a little shine for playing the outside of the lane unless there's plenty of oil outside on your tournament pattern. Good luck.

Couple of my students (similar styles to you), had the same problem. With the low RG core, rough buff finish and stronger drillings, Absolute just quit for them on average oil. On oilier conditions, their rev rate and rotation was simple not enough with the factory box surface.

What I did was to drill Absolutes with higher pins, around 4-1/2 to 5, put a strong weight hole and adjust the surface. This literally changed the faith of their Absolutes

IME, it seemed players have lower rev rate with little amount of axis rotation, generally, did not match up with Absolute. On the other hand, they all fell in love with Rampages and Smash-Rs/Nemesis' either polished or sanded. It could be Activator plus, lower RG/high diff. core or combination of many other things, I don't know. I had not come across this problem with the Original Inferno.

First of all, what I would do about my Absolute is to listen Notclay's advice.

For the new ball
- I've drilled couple of Maxxx Zones but I don't have enough experience to make a recommendation.
- Although it has a lower RG core than Nemesis/Wizard, I would suggest Copperhead. Adjust to surface after drilling if necessary.
- Since it is very similar to Original Inferno, you can choose Rattler. Ofcourse, again, you need to adjust the surface after drilling.

Thanks for some good insight, I have baked my inferno once, and it did make a difference. However I have always had a problem pushing through the backend with oily lanes. I will certainly keep this ball in my arsenal, but need something that will grip the lanes early. I am strongly considering the maxxzone. I also am interested in the fury destruction. It looks as if it may have more angle in the backend. Anyone have any experience with this ball?

If you are looking for something for oilier conditions, you can use Destruction with strong drilling AND surface. However, I would not prefer that for someone with your style. You may need earlier reading coverstock/core..

Go for Maxxx Zone. You can always adjust the surface for your needs.
