Title: What in the current Big B/DV8/Radical line up can replace the Massive Damage?
Post by: Buckwild on April 03, 2014, 08:10:26 PM
I have a MD, which is one of my favorite balls and its time to retire it. Which ball in the current Brunswick/DV8/Radical lineup is a close replacement?

If you throw 15, you could get one here:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRUNSWICK-MASSIVE-DAMAGE-bowling-ball-1ST-QUALITY-15lb-brand-new-in-box-179-/351038328330?pt=Bowling&hash=item51bb83ce0a

Grab a closeout Meanstreak Brawler.  It will have a little more giddy-up when it makes the move, but that strong revving midlane.

The closest current ball would be a Meanstreak Beatdown with a smoother surface and potentially some polish.  Another could choice would be the Yeti Unleashed with as smoother earlier reading drill pattern.  Both balls will be quicker when reading friction than the massive damage with the Yeti Unleashed being the snappier of the two.

Okay, so Absolute Inferno cover that is a tad more angular off the spot. This ball is a winner, so if you can find another I'd say grab it fast.  My friend still uses his every week. The ball must have 500 games on it, and we bake it, resurface it, and it's like new again...

Reaction-wise for me the Burgundy Ringer is pretty close, though, especially compared to the Massive Damage shiny.

I would agree with Lane in that the Burgundy Ringer would have a similar reaction. Or, a Meanstreak Brawler would be a little stronger option.

If you can get your hands on a Too Reckless it will be real close.
The Brawler isn't a bad option either.
I found the Ringer to be weaker and flippier.

The Massive Damage was IMO one of the most underrated balls from any manufacturer in recent times. I still have mine with very low mileage on it. Got a new grip and span shortly after I bought and although I haven't redrilled it I can't bring myself to sell it.

I have the Burgundy Ringer and while I love it I don't think it's as versatile.

Thanks for all of the replies! I am leaning towards the Meanstreak Brawler. Another ball I saw in the Radical lineup, Torrid Affair. When i looked at the specs, the RG is similar. Its not close to the MD due to the cover?

I'm not sure what sort of specs you have (rev rate, speed, etc.), but again I found the Brawler to be a lesser ball than the MD.  In fact, I'd take the Burgundy Ringer over the Brawler any day.  I might be the only Brunswick fan who didn't like the Brawler, but I do think the Ringer is a great ball,

The Activator coverstock is really special.  I'm curious what some of the others would say about the Aura Mystic, which I haven't tried.  I have an OG Aura and was surprised at how versatile that ball is.  The Mystic is supposed to be even better.

The Radical options I would suggest would be the Grease Monkey or Yeti Untamed. I think you can get a similar look out of one of those that you have with the Massive Damage. I have been very happy with my Grease Monkey, ball is a great buy at the price it is at.

Robert,

Are those choices still the same, or are there more current Radical options to choose from?

Id lean towards the Ringer Platinum  or the Torrid Elite. I have one or two undrilled Massive Damage and Torrid Elite.

Yes for the Grease Monkey but will change the Untamed to the Uncaged. My Pro Shop guy is a Brunswick staffer and after watching me throw the Uncaged he suggested the Uncaged saying the reaction reminded him of his Massive Damage.
