Title: What is RG and What does it do
Post by: xxZonexx on June 22, 2005, 11:43:44 AM
I was reading the post about Dulling the Intense inferno 2 600 that drew some attention to me so what is the diffrence between a high RG ball and a Low Rg ball.
--------------------
Lane one is good because they use brunswick's Covers.

A ball with a low RG will want to start sooner, and *typically* roll earlier and have a smoother reaction.  High RG balls *typically* go longer and break a bit harder.

they used to label low rg balls as "center heavy" and high rg balls as "cover heavy".

Vertigo is 2.47(low)
 http://www.stormbowling.com/ball/ball.asp?ballid=192
so I'm gonna say that 2.52 is low also, if I am wrong correct me.

Yes it is correct the Ace is 2.52 also, and it is low

Depends on the coverstock and bowler I'd imagine.

According to you guys info, High would let it go longer.

Low: Absolute Inferno 2.6 ("Ultra-Low" according to Brunswick)
Medium: BVP Punisher 4.6
Higher Medium - Slate Blue Quantum 5.9
High: Groove Reactive 8.0

So if the absolute with the 2.6 is ultra low and gets into a roll pretty quick, then why does my intense inferno go real long and then snap! It's a 2.52!! Lower than the AI.

Because the 2.6 is ona  scale of Rg avg. from 1-10 its not the actual rg value. Its super low at a 2.6 out of 10 possible.

But my question is...why does the II go much longer than AI with the AI having a higher RG?

Legend, you're mixing up ACTUAL RG numbers, with Brunswick's scale.  The Intense has an ACTUAL minimum RG value of 2.52 (the number actually means something but it's hard to explain), but a scale number of 4.4.  I think the Absolute's ACTUAL minimum value is about 2.46, but it's scale number is 2.6...

OK, I didnt see the RG average when I looked at it. What about the Crunch Time? It goes almost as long as the II, but moves a little harder on the back. It's numbers say RG 2.52 and Diff .47

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I am trying to gain more knowledge of how this thing works.

Coverstock would probably be the reason for that?

OK with drillings aside. If I'm looking to buy a new ball, can I look at the RG to compare and see if the ball will go longer or rev sooner than another? Then drill according to what reaction I want to acheive.

Oh, another thing to add to your confusion, legend.  The RG values of a ball change when you drill holes in it.  THAT is why a ball will react different with the pin in different places, because the pin is the top of the core, and by moving the core around, you drill into different places, and change the RG value.

It will help, but coverstock is VERY important to reaction as well.  So, you have to compare RG AND coverstock.

How do I tell what coverstock is more aggressive between 2 different companys without going on hearsay?

Well, you really can't.  But if people are actually trying to help, they'll give you an HONEST answer as to what each will do.  For example, instead of asking "Should I get Ball A or ball B", you should ask "does the cover of ball A let it go longer than ball B?"   Try to make it neutral, so people don't just say "OH get this ball I have it"...
