Which one?
« on: July 26, 2006, 06:24:53 AM »
I want to get a ball that would be good for medium oil. I was thinking the Red Zone or the Smokin' Inferno. I have low-med revs, medium speed, down and in.

Thats easy.  The Red Zone.  The Smokin with your lack of rev rate will go too long down the lane.  The Red Zone will be easier to control as it will be smoother off the break point.

One more thing....you already have the Strike Zone.  What do you want different from that?

You might want to check what Strike Zones are selling for now, get another one (if they're cheaper), change the surface to match the Red Zone and use a different drilling.

I don't want another Strike Zone... I like having different balls. Plus, I can get the Red Zone real cheap, but I'll keep the place to myself.

I'll be having the Scorchin' Inferno, the Stike Zone, and then I need one for medium.

You may want to do a step down from the Strike Zone.  Go with something like a Rampage by Brunswick.  A Overtime or Smashtime by Ebonite would work well.

Do you think I should stick to one company? Or 2?

Vapor Zone would fit nicely.

Scorchin', Strike Zone, Ace, Sling Blade. Is that ok?

Those four are good balls. What curve shape do you want and do you want the ball to "read the backends" or handle some carrydwon on medium conditions? Steve would know better than I, but the Hammer Doom is a great medium ball so is the Vapor Zone. The Red Zone will be even-reacting versus a "skid-snap" of the Doom. I think you're set well now and just may want to change the surface of your Ace.

The Scorchin' will be dull and drilled for max hook. The Strike Zone is dull but drilled for more of med/hvy... the ace is polished and for med...the sling blade isn't shiny or really dull and it hooks less than my Ace.

Also, here's something I learned from an Ebonite guy: many bowlers make the mistake of judging hook by the backend reaction. That's why you see Ebonite and Hammer currently putting out higher grit and polished equipment versus 800-1200 grit dull and matte finishes. It's good advice to take into account for your next purchase.

IMO..with the arsenal you have currently, I really think that a Rampage would fit really well.  The Vapor Zone is a great ball, probably the best release of 2006.  BUT....you need something to fit under the Strike Zone with a different look.  I think you need to fit a pearl cover in there since you already have solids in the Scorchin and Strike Zone.  You need something to clears the heads really well with good backend.  If you wanted to stay in the Zone line, too bad you could not find a Zone Classic.  It would get down the lane better than the Vapor.  If you like the Hammer stuff, the Doom, as KDawg mentioned, would be a good choice as well.  Go with something mid performance to fit this need.  You already have enough higher end stuff with the Scorchin, Strike, and Ace.

Choices:  Rampage, Smashtime, Hammer Doom,
