Wrist Troubles! Help
« on: March 12, 2008, 09:38:58 AM »
Ok, I have been bowling since I was 4 and I know a lot about the game but this I cannot figure out. My wrist started hurting about a year ago and it really effected my game. I do cup my wrist and I have tried every wrist helper known to bowling and they either do not help or hinder my acuracy. I recently dropped to 14lb from 15lb. This did help my wrist but now my acuracy is off. I have tried everything I know to do with timing and positioning. I want to go back to 15lb. If there any suggestions for me please help.

Thanks everyone

The problem is in the drilling. You might have too much reverse in the thumb or the span is too long - or both. It's causing you to squeeze the ball too much causing too much stress on your wrist.

When the heads are hooking, you're wrist starts to hurt more..!! Because, you can't lay the ball down at the foul line, you have to loft it more. You become out of time and out of balance physically with the ball being released on the upswing, which also forces you to squeeze the ball more, using more muscle. =:^D

I have changed different spans. Originally I was 4 1/8 to both fingers and a quarter reverse in the thumb. I recently worked with Mo Pinel (MoRich) and he shorted my middle finger only and took my thumb pitch to 1/8 reverse and changed my hand position and it made it hurt worse. Actually my wrist hurts less when they start hooking more. Weird I know but I just want it to stop. Thanks for the help guys, and I will try anything.

I personally had to have my span length a little and took the thumb pitches to zero to avoid gripping the ball. My wrist use to hurt a lot and now it does not. But I also now tape my right wrist with athletic tape on top of a tight piece of stretch tape that I put around my wrist before putting the athletic tape. Wrap it a little bit tight. Try it and you will feel the difference.

You need to get one of those braces that goes just below your elbow. I know it seems strange but you have tendonitis and since all the muscles for you hand and wrist are in your upper fore arm you need to treat there. Its a cheap thing to try. you can usually get them for about $10 I had the same trouble for years. I wore the brace for a few years and now everything is fine and I don't need it anymore.
Always be sincere, even when you don't mean it.

I have been in the same situation. I shortened my span 1/4" to both fingers and went to 3/8 forward in the thumb. I have not had problems in years and have started to lengthen the span and reduce the forward in the thumb.

The forward in the thumb really helped me relax my hand throughout my approach.

Just my $.02...
