Wrong Drill?
« on: January 16, 2007, 03:14:17 PM »
Hey everyone, im new to this board and had a question about the drill i have on a new Smokin' Inferno I purchased. It was a special offer from bowlingball.com, with a white pin, not the original red. I've been bowling seriously for about 6 months now, 5 months in league. i bowl right handed, with a lot of revs, with a ball speed of about 15 mph. When i received the ball, it came with the brunswick sheet which had the recommended drill on them. I don't know too much about drilling, but according to the sheet, the longer lasting balls are all drilled above the fingers. the previous ball i was using was a Raw Hammer Doom, and the pin was drilled below the ring finger, just a bit to the right, with the cg down center line of grip. i told my pro shop driller that i wanted the ball to last longer this time because i was having problems with the ball hooking too early. i showed him the sheet and he said he already knew what to do. when i came back to pick it up, the ball was drilled with the pin even lower then my doom, and even closer to the center line. i tried it out on the lanes that day, and i was having problems even getting it to the pocket. even though the reaction was good, all of my strikes were brooklyn. another thing my friend had pointed out was that he thought he heard the ball rolling over some of the holes. when i checked the track on my ball after a shot, i did see oil build up on my ring finger insert.

i have a picture of my doom and my inferno in the links below, any help would be appreciated, thanks

Garrett

actually yea its the middle finger not ring finger, that was my mistake. and true, because the cg is within about an inch of the pin i see now why its complicated. Now is this the best layout for length though? or are there other ways it could have been drilled?

The SI white pin is a urethane ball! Or, at least, a ball with a VERY weak coverstock that is suited only to very light oil or short patterns. It is not comparable to a red pin SI.

Even with a strong drill to it, it will probably not move much, and if so, smoothly. A length drilling with a high pin above the fingers has killed any hooking potential except for dry lanes.

when i bought the smokin' inferno white pin, i knew that the pin was going to be between 1'-2'. that didnt seem to bother me much becuase it seems that the shorter pin balls hook less then the original version, which was something i was ok with.

now to response with dizzyfugu, even if the smokin' inferno white pin is urethane, i still overhook it.  the ball acts like any other inferno to me lol...im putting a video up of me throwing one shot on youtube. ill put it up here when its finished.

You've only been bowling for 6 months? Your ball roll is quite amazing for just starting out. I don't see what your problem with your ball speed is. Your ball speed and rev rate look like they match up pretty well, neither one looks more dominant. Could you post your approach?

The white pin is cleaner through the fronts and stronger on the back so your either going to have to get left and open up your angles or use less axis rotation   (more forward roll, less sideways) and be very nice to it at the bottom and do everything you can not to hit up on it in the release.

With the way that ball reads the lanes for you I would go and buy a bag full of Brunswick balls cause there's nothing wrong with your ball reaction with Big B equipment.

Dizzy, the white pin is still has the Activator Advance cover which is REACTIVE,  the only difference between the red pin and the white pin is that the white pin didn't cure like it was supposed to which made it weaker. It is not a urethane coverstock. Believe it or not people come on here read post like yours and then your "theory" becomes fact to them and they may not purchase a ball because you posted false information.

If you keep the ball you might try this.  Redrill with the pin 1 inch from your PAP, on a line from PAP to just above the finger hole.  Stack the CG under the pin, again 1 inch from the PAP.  This happens to be one of my favorite layouts.  You'll have a ball that will get into a roll early (yes, I know you don't want that, BUT) yet not hook a ton.  This is very much a control drilling for me.

White pin Smokin drill sheet vs. Red pin Smokin drill sheet ....descriptions are different on ball reactions, but only difference that I see (and what causes more length)is White has a hardness of 78-79 coverstock is listed as reactive, and Red has hardness of 76-77 and coverstock is Activator Advance. More length 120 vs. 100, and breakpoint smoother for White at 80 vs. 95. Cores, RG, diffs, cover preps are all same. Customer has both drilled same and loves the differences he gets....just as described. Hope this helps. Short pins can be set up with pin above as long as top weight is lower, I drilled one with cg in finger hole and got to 7/8 finger weight by taking both fingers deep. Ball had 2 oz top and a 1 inch pin.

so i see that the best way to probably fix the layout is to re-drill correct? i would re-drill but at the moment i don't exactly have the money to plug and re-drill the Inferno. is there an alternative way to get the ball to to hook less, such as an x-hole? is there any other way other then re-drill that is easy on my budget?

a flare decreasing balance hole will make the ball hook less, or you can add some polish and see what the ball does.

With regards to the ball hooking too much, the biggest factor in reaction is ball surface.  I don't know what the ball was finished at from the factory, but you should be able to have the ball sanded to a more fine grit (maybe up to 2000 or 4000 grit) and then polished.  This should help to smooth out the reaction and cut down on the overall amount of hook.

As far as tracking over the middle finger, that is likely going to require a plug and redrill to put the pin in the "flare-safe" area.
