Which Groove?
« on: February 16, 2006, 02:00:01 AM »
I want to get something for light/dry conditions and I was looking into getting one of the Groove balls.  Do you guys have any suggestions as to which Groove would be best?  I want something for extreme dry lanes that is not going to hook way more than advertised.  My specs are in my profile and I can provide any other info if needed.  Thanks!

I've been wanting to try one of the power grooves but am questioning which one!

I have a dynamic groove that lets me kill one of our local shots...straight up 5 or 8 or whatever....wet shot with a lot of dry outside 10.

I've taken this ball to another house and it is even dryer but seems to have some au jus right near this shiny balls breakpoint....over under!

I just tried a Columbia Scout high flare urethane...seems to make the move at the right time!!!  Just not enough punch!

Anyone have any opinions if one of the proactives black or plum might work???
Or dryer?

I have a yellow chrome reactive I was going to put pin down a bit to smooth out and make the move smoother?

Those that have tried above...ideas?

The Plum was a real sleeper.  If you can still find one, it would be a worthwhile try.  Glides through the front, goes into a heavy roll in back, angular without being flippy.

$ for $ The storm Tropical is a much better ball, The weight block is much more clearlt defined in the ball and is still versatile enough that it can be used on all but extremes. as an adlib i wouild like to say that Im in no way a fan of storm Im just going by what I sell and drill in the pro shop.

As an aside the shot I am trying to use this on...has bone outside 10 but is slippery at the break at 40 feet.  The dynamic groove pin above and side of fingers pushes real good but then has trouble making the turn.

The columbia scout high flare urethane I tried makes the break a little earlier but too sluggish!

I was thinking the plum might be sweet also!

REgards,

PS looks tough to find!

If you face true dry conditions, consider an urethane ball. There is the Brunswick Groove out there, and it will give you an mild, arcing hook. It does not really roll, though, since it lacks a dynamic core. Personally, I own a Red Pearl Urethane Hammer (similar design) and love it when anything else, even mild reactives, burns up.

I used the Plum Pearl Power Groove, but it never worked well for me. I do not consider it to be a dry lanes ball - it is a bit stronger than the reactive PGs and grips the lanes a little earlier OOB. It makes a great ball for late games, though, when all the all has been played down and carrydown makes the back end spotty. The coverstock is great, I wish Brunswick had used it with some lower RG core - the PG system never worked for me... The Black Sparkle, even polished, is even a touch stronger than the Plum Pearl. A great ball for carrydown, a sleeper, but NOT for dry lanes.

I'd say the ry/R is the best option from Brunswick at the moment.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the info and advice.  I think I will go with a urethane ball since it seems to be the mildest of the mild.  I hate buying something that hooks way too much.  I can have a ton of hand if I NEED to make something hook.  I have tried buying "dry" lane balls before and they all hook too much, so urethane seems to be the way to go.  Thanks again!

I'm interested in the plum...but before I do it I"m going to be doing a little more testing on my AMF VP2.

There was a post above saying he would have liked to see the proactive coverstock on a lower rg ball...or a review I forget.

I see the AMF VP2 as being that pearl particle slightly earlier ball.

Mine is even and smooth with a ton of continuation....A little too much.

I'm going back to rethrow and maybe add a stabilizing weighthole FIRST!

Specs 2.50 rg and diff of .30 pearl particle.
Earlier roll similar flare.

Gets good lenght with good control and a pretty strong move but rounded off dry boards!

Definitely earlier and smoother than the reactive powergrooves!

I'll get back!

REgards,

Luckylefty
I've seen some nice series by others in my severe wet dry league when they are really movin in the back!  This is by the way the old superbeast in a slightly stronger new wrapper!  A lot of people liked that pill!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but...didn't you just describe the BVP Ambush?
