Title: You have got to be kidding.
Post by: C-G ProShop-Carl on June 12, 2003, 09:28:45 AM
Just back from a seminar with Bowling Journal's Mike Riggans. Very informative and educational. If you can attend a drilling/ball seminar he holds do it!

But one thing that I saw, asked him about and recieved the same opinion from him on was that the new TIME ZONE looked very familiar. After a slight look into the situation we came up with the new TIME ZONE actually having the same core AND coverstock as the (I know I am going to get this wrong) Rebel ECX. This is par------atleast as far as my feelings go towards companies releasing balls that are essentially the same.

This is sickening. Not that it is a bad ball----but they have nothing new.

Alot more people will buy it though since it'll be more widely availible and the name is reputable.  It's all about making money anyway.  And if I'm correct, didn't the ECX have that funny grenade shaped core with the fan looking thing on one side of it?  IT definately had a funny shape.  Something like this

(]b

then again, I could be wrong.

I guess it's you the bowling ball manufacturers love and it's you who love the manufacturers who put out new balls every other day. But I have to ask why you can't find a good ball to use with one of the 47 MILLION balls already out there ??

I mmean, everybody loves new toys, but do you really need another new one?

charlest, I don't see where he says he's looking for a new ball? I took his post differently.  He's saying...if you're going to come out with something new (whether you're in the market or not) don't recycle something.....at least that's how I took it ....

If it is the old Rebel ECX you are all in luck.

This was on some conditions one of the best assymetric reactives I ever used on synthetic lanes.

I think I had about 3 260 + out of my first 6 games with it!

I still miss it, but I wasn't getting out to all synthetic houses much so it went out!

If he meant it that way, I can see a little of what you say. But, I can also see a very positive side to their bringing this ball out as a Brunswick, because, as a Revolution brand ball, it got very little press, its availability was extremely limited AND people would generally have been very hesitant to buy a Revolution ball. I know this because when they see my Revolution balls, even from Pro Shops I get "What is this?"

So if this is the ECX OR the Defiance, it is still a truly new ball for 99.99% of the bowlers out there. For people like Luckylefty, it gives him an opportunity to get a new one of his favorite balls.

My opinion is there are still far too many new balls being introduced.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with rereleasing an old ball.  If it was a product people liked and had success with, why not put it back out on the market?

Now I'll answer my own question.  It's because the ball companies have everyone duped into thinking that new "premium" (whatever that means) ball releases represent "New Technology" developed after extensive "Research and Development."  Productive new developments in bowling ball technology occur rarely.  The vast majority of the time, new isn't any better, it's just different.  If the ball companies rereleased old products and people found out that they still work, it just might slow down the runaway train known as the "Ball-of-the-Month Club," and we wouldn't want that to happen, now, would we?

On the subject of the "Ball-of-the-Month Club," I believe I've noticed a change in the name of the company that is leading the pack.  The company's name used to be "Brunswick" and now it seems to be "Storm."  Storm used to release a couple new "premium" (whatever that means) balls in the fall and a couple new "premium" balls in the spring, with a few others sprinkled throughout the year.  Now the new Storm balls come rolling out of the mill too fast to even keep the names, colors...and smells...straight.

SHiv, I was thinking the same thing about Track. They seemed to have slowed down a tad, but it was wa new ball every week there for a month or 2.

It was definately the Rebel ECX. Mike had the half ball there of it. Same core same cover.

I am not saying that it is a bad thing or that maybe it will market better with ZONE written on it. What I am saying is that they are releasing balls that have older technology in it. Brunswick is not the only company guilty of this, But sure, the Bruiser may be a good ball, and yes it is going to use a Quantum core. WHY? Can they not come up with something new?

I am using Brunswick as the example because they just "HAPPENED" to come across a box of Danger Zones in their wharehouse. Yeah right. They made more because the stuff they have now is not selling as well as they would like. Basically the Danger Zone was one of the better/most popular balls ever made and they new people would suck them up.

The Inferno is a popular ball and people are doing well with it. I have not seen anyone bowl well with any of the Fuze line. PBA national bowlers do, but those guys would bowl well with a marble.

The fact that these balls have older cores is not bad. I have not stopped buying any of them because of it. The basic reason for the initial post was if you are spending the money for a new ball, shouldn't it have new technology?

i'm looking at the cores from the revolution rebel ecx and the brunswick time zone and they don't look the same to me. the coverstocks are different as well. i had a rebel ecx and it was a great ball---IF brunswick markets this ball as a return of the ecx that would be great for those of you who weren't lucky enough to own one. brunswick is hardly alone in churning out "new balls" all the time---lately columbia 300, track, and storm have been doing plenty of this.

as far as a new ball "having" to have new technology to consider buying it, people buy new cars every day with the same technology---especially cars made by american owned companies.

the best way to sum this up is like i learned in latin class in high school----" caveat emptor"....( let the buyer beware ).

So what's the problem with sticking with something that's tried and true?  I'd love them forever if they'd make the X-Zones for as long as I'm alive, why mess with something like that?  I can't remember the last ball I've looked forward to as much as the Time Zone.  Just because I know it's going to be great.  I'd rather see them put out older stuff cause I know what it's going to do.  It's ridiculous trying to keep up with these other ball of the week companies.

I do great with my fuze detonator when the conditions are right.  I have seen plenty of other people be successful with the fuze as well.  Some balls work for some people, and don't for others.  Also, why would Brunswick stop using old cores and coverstocks, when they are successful?  I think their goal is to make money, not to make one person such as yourself happy by spending a massive amount of money to make some new stuff.

Speaking of which, don't the new Columbia Throttles have a strikingly similar core to a few balls Brunswick have made at long time ago . . .

Low end and lighter oil.

FOr that low volume shot I don't know if there was a better one than the dynamic groove.  Lots of length plus a big backend.  Think Columbia scout but better.  Big backend!  Lots of power way down lane.

What was missing was something like the beast or track magic.  Very low differential core.  But maybe a strong weighthole inside the pap on a scream/r.

Probably could produce at least a pearl pulse if not a pearl beast.

I asked on of the Bruns. guys at the Vegas Expo , about that Throttle core, and told him it looked like they stole it.

He said yeah, closely resembles the Igniter core which he said did not sell well, so he was glad they came out with a core like that.

Kinda funny he would say that but its true.
