Zone Line
« on: September 02, 2006, 04:07:55 AM »
I have the Vapor Zone and it seems to match up very well, on most of the conditions I bowl on.  I am wondering what would be a good step down from the VZ, in terms of overall hook and breakpoint angle?  Would the Red Zone fit there or would there be some overlap?  The Red Zone seems like it might be pretty close to the VZ by looking at the Brunswick ball rating chart.

Right now, I have a Track Desert Heat in that spot, but it is just as angular as the VZ, which is usually not what I want for a step down.

I am also thinking of a Strike Zone for a step up from the VZ.  It just bothers me that the SZ and RZ both have the same cover and the grit/finish is the only real difference between the two balls.  Would I be better off with a scuffed VZ?

Thanks
Chuck

A logical step down would seem to be the Zone Classic as it has a slightly weaker cover (Activator vs Activator +).  The drilling you put on it will allow you to control the breakpoint to complement the Vapor Zone you already have.

The Time Zone would be a good fit there if you can still find one.  The added bonus of finding one is that it's cheaper now than it ever was.

Call around to local Pro Shops or search online.  This ball is made for dryer lanes (read, light to medium oil) and I think it would be perfect behind a Vapor Zone.

Granted I don't know how you throw so one mans light oil ball is another mans medium oil ball.  But if you have a typical shot (whatever that means) and the Vapor Zone is your typical lane condition ball (medium to medium heavy, give or take) then the Time Zone being a bit milder but not overlapping is a good call, in my opinion.

Thanks for all the replies.

twoheadedboy, It's funny that mentioned the Awesome Hook because I already have one "above the Vapor".  That thing hooks a ton.  I think there may be some room between the two, for a Strike Zone or something around 800 grit.  Not sure though.

Thanks

Time Zone is a good tip, even though some players do not well with the higher RG asym. core. Another option would IMHO be a Rampage OOB (should be as strong as the TZ) or a Wizard/Nemesis with a polished or very high grit surface (or even with Rough Buff/compound). The Red Zone would IMHO not be something "below" the VZ, rather a more arcing alternative for similar conditions.
