Title: Icon
Post by: admin on December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM
What's in a name? If you're talking about the new Columbia 300® IconTM , there's plenty. For starters, it delivers unprecedented versatility in oil. Introducing our new MuscleTM coverstock which provides strong hook with continuous backend motion when sanded and aggressive skid/flip reaction when polished. In other words, it like two balls in one. So whether you want power and hook in heavy oil, or superior backend reaction on medium lane conditions, this is your ball. The new Columbia 300 Icon - performance at its peak. It's the name everyone will remember - especially your competition.

Well I just had a chance to throw this baby tonight.  A friend of
mine had just drilled it and had still not yet thrown it.  The condition
I was on was not great.  Heads and midlane were very choppy, had not been done for 2 days and there was a ton of carry down.  I began throwing my Eraser, Heat 2 and Pearl pulse.  None of these balls would turn the corner and they all tried to pick up a roll too soon.  Then I pulled out the Icon. This ball is in a world of its own.  It was left in box condition(Compound finnish) and was drilled with the pin above the ring finger, and CG kicked out one inch.  It cleared the heads like most plastic balls, picked up a good, even roll in the mid lane, and just unleased its "muscle" on the back end.  I went from trying to carry dead 10's to watching the ball hit flush leaving solid 9's.  I think this is one of the few balls I will splurge on and buy as soon as they come out.  If the cover stock really is as tuneable as Columbia says, then I feel they really might have the next generation particle in the new Muscle cover stock.  Well thats just my two cents, but I can't wait to see more of this ball.

I was very much looking forward to throwing this Columbia release.

I drilled it up with the pin slightly left of directly over the ring finger.  That puts the pin at 5 1/2 inches.  The CG is at 5 inches, with a slight bit of finger weight and positive side (not enough to make a difference in reaction).  I left the coverstock at its out of the box finish, which is a shined up 600 grit.

For starters, the ball is very aggressive, and even more so, incredibly powerful.  I had no problem playing any place on the lane from the 5th arrow out.  The box surface is a bit too aggressive to play further in than that without leaing the 10 pin, however at 600 grit, any ball is like that.  One day I will take it to 1000 and shine it up to see how much that changes things.

I put a good amount of speed and revolutions on tha ball and the reaction on the backend was an incredible strong flip-roll.  It's almost like a Zone that actually gets down the lane before hooking.  The one thing that I noticed almost immediately, and really stood out, is that the less you try to rev the ball, the harder the ball H.I.T.S.  While standing left and throwing right produced great results, I think I might have shattered some pins while playing straight up the boards and laying off the release a little.  This ball might be the best stroker ball since the Danger Zone, probably even better.  The good part is that crankers will like it a whole lot as well.

I bowled a 9-pin no-tap tournament today and shot 790 (granted it was no-tap, but it would have been higher if the stupid synthetic approaches weren't like ice).  I hit the pocket over and over and didn't leave my first 9-count until the 8th frame of the second game.  Before that I was 14 for my first 14 on carrying pocket hits.  The final game I threw a 300 game with only 4 9-counts as opposed to 8 "real" strikes. Only had six 9-counts for the entire 3 games.

This ball shreds racks.  There is no other way to put it that gets the point across so well.  The fact that it hits so well when you throw it straighter can only help my bowling as I won't be so inclined to hook the ball more than I should need to, and I can be a more accurate player while not sacrificing any hitting power.

I can't think of any bowler who can't fit THE ICON somewhere in their arsenal.

Columbia wants you to "Make a Name" for itself!
with the New Muscle Cover Stock!

The New Columbia ICON comes to us with the "Promotion" of a
"Dual Coverstock" The Best of Both Worlds! (Reactive Resin) and (Particle) all in one!

They put their new Coverstock on an "Old" or should I say "Tried and Proven" weight block design that comes to us from the (Rock-On,Game Pearl,Wicked.)

The "Dense Polymer Core" is a powerful core! So there was some good thinking on Columbia's part to use this one first!

The New Muscle Coverstock is supposed to work like a "Reactive" ball when shinned up! Skid/Flip type of hook reaction! and like a "Particle" ball when
slightly dull, Strong ARC hook style and also bite threw heavy oil!

We took our test ball and drilled it "Label Leverage" (3-1/2 X 4) Drilling
and No Balance hole. we left this ball box finish which comes to us slightly
shined. (Compound finish)as per the columbia AD sheet.
(Side Note) Some of these balls may come with a "sheened" finish depending on the MFG process quality! We opened three boxes and found two balls sheened and one shinny.(Compound Finish)

We got Our ICON on a fresh pair of lanes oiled in a typical league house pattern and from the first roll of this ball, we were able to cut threw the oil and find a excellent read and reaction on the lanes!

Strong Hook! Not Snappy! more controlled! with "TREMENDOUS" Hitting power! I expected a great hit from this weight block and it was there!

We continued to roll (3)three games and found this ball to stay in play with
small adjustments and moves. Being that I was the Only one on this pair of lanes that were freshly dressed, I found that even out of the box, this ball
is strong enough for most bowlers to conquer those Medium to Oil lane conditons!

Just to see if I could Get the "Best of Both Worlds" from this new coverstock,
I went to the ball spinner and applied some "Black Magic" to see if I could get some Skid/Flip out of this ball! I went back to the same fresh lanes I just
finished three games on earlier and WoW! there was a difference!

I was able to actually get this ball farther down the lane and then watch it
make a "Strong" and "Sharper" turn at the break point! With my "tweener" release I was impressed at the difference I was able to get! I still would not call it a true "Skid/Snap" in my hands but those of you with "Stronger Releases" will get more! But Over all, a Strong Ball for just about anyone!

The Hit and Carry actually improved as this ball was throwing pins everywhere! No Problem here with hitting power! This ball has it!!!!
(By shinning this ball alittle more it retained more energy for the hit!)

After an excellent game of "Out and Back" I wanted to see if I could get the "Other side of the world" with this ball slightly dull.(Particle Style Traction)

I went back to the ball spinner and applied a 600 grit sand to My ICON
(as recommended by Columbia) in their Promotional AD.

Back to the Fresh lanes and again this ball "Flexed its MUSCLE"!
This ball showed tremendous traction threw the oil and provided me with a "Strong" ARC style of hook! I could get this ball out and still get it to
ARC back with no problem. The Hitting power seemed to decrease somewhat in that this ball was bleeding some of its energy getting down the lane.
But compared to most other "Particle Balls" this ball was still hitting Good!

In the Dull State this ball will require "ALOT" of Oil! to work well!
But, I think overall Columbia has a Powerful Ball here!
Those of you who want to get the Best of Both Worlds? Then the ICON is
your Ball! Keep in mind Shell adjustment is still very important here!
And when it comes to drilling this ball, go ahead and use your favorite pattern. But those of you with alot of hand, (Cranker Types) Keep the drilling simple!

We will Recommend this ball to all bowlers and to our customers!

I can sum up this ball in two words: OOOOOOHHHH BABY!!!
I've been looking for something to fit between my Arc & my Spirit, and I think I've found it. Since I wanted to do a good comparison, I drilled this Icon as close to the Arc & Spirit as possible. The Arc and Spirit are both drilled 5x5, with neither having a weight hole. The Icon is drilled 5x5, but being a 4" pin out it needed a hole to take it back to neutral. Ball reaction? Just great. Very predictable. I left it with the lightly polished factory finish, and in this mode it played about a board deeper than my polished Spirit, but not as deep as my Reaction ARC. On a fresh house shot, I could play either the Spirit or Icon with similar results, but where the Icon starts to shine is when the oil carrys down a bit. At that point it became more useful and more predictable than the Spirit. I had good carry. Every ball that I released cleanly was a strike. I had a few shots where I hung just a bit clearing the thumbhole and turned a bit too quickly, and a few of those left weak tens, but that's not the ball's fault. I carried light, flush, tripped a 4, even had a few energetic messengers. Normally, my messengers are more like UPS trucks - they kind of roll up slowly and just drop the package off at your door. Mine rarely fly around - but today there were a few.
As soon as I finish shaping that thumbhole to perfection - look out! This ball is a keeper!!

After about 6 games, there  are no signs of the dreaded "Muscle Atrophy".

Columbias new muscle coverstock is a winner. ICON from
Columbia was left shined 4x4 drill and used on AMF synthetic
with medium track and heavy oil in the middle and the ball
goes long and flips. Second ICON R&D from distributor left
1000 grit scotchbrite and drilled 3 3/8 x 3 3/8 was used
on AMF synthetic with heavy middle oil and dry outsides;
ball can be sent from inside as far outside as you want
and still recover with explosive power; in fact I shot 300
the 6th game on this condition in league with the ICON. I
don't beleive I've ever had a ball that recovers that strong
and doesn't lose power.

I ordered an ICON at 15 lbs. and had it drilled 4 x 4 to give an earlier rolling path with a smoother arc.  My first game of practice was before a Thursday night league, and they had just oiled, so the ball wasn't moving much (this house has been using quite a bit of oil on the outsides lately), so I took it in to have it dulled up a bit, as Columbia says the Muscle coverstock is very versatile.  They weren't kidding, it was like a totally different ball.  It definitely grabbed the lane harder, and when this ball hits the pins, they don't have a chance.  The ICON carries off hits great, and even when you think you may have sent it out wider than you wanted to, the ball still finds a way to the pocket and H.I.T.S.  The other thing I noticed about this ball is that I've never seen a ball pick up speed so fast after it turns the corner.  After the ICON makes it's break, it finds another gear and heads for the pocket.  I'm very pleased with this ball, and if the Muscle coverstock holds up, I may get another one, and drill it to go longer.

Much like thegame had reviewed, this ball didn't move alot on the heavy oil out of the box.  I had drilled it up 3.5 x 4 and left it in the box condition.  I took it on the lanes that had a good 10 or more games on them and this thing just lay the pins in its wake.  I then took it out for the summer league, long heavy oil and it nearly went straight.  I took it to the back dulled it down on the resurfacer.  I brought it back and i wouldn't have known it was the same ball if i hadn't let it off my hand, this ball when down my mark, and took a strong arcing left turn, struck-out the last six frames.  I can't wait to take it to some lighter oil patterns because although it hits good when dull, it really shows muscle with the "out of the box" finish.  9 out of 10 dull/10 out of 10 {currently} shine.

Tried the Icon last night, and this review is probably going to sound like a broken record.  Drilled it up stacked leverage (I'm a tweener with med speed, med revs)The shot I bowled on is long heavy oil. They oil it twice a day, so I was on a fresh shot for the early shift.  Out of box, this ball did nothing but skid.  Took it back into the shop and had the cover taken down a little bit.  Huge difference.  Strong arc to the pocket and impressive carry.  After the surface tweak 26 strikes out of the last 32 frames. The ball was nice on the fresh but more impressive after some carrydown.  Slight adjustment to the right and back to striking. Only hope this coverstock holds up better than previous Columbia particles

I’ve had my original Icon for a couple of weeks, and I decided to get another one. The original one was drilled with the pin and CG stacked just barely to the right of the ring finger. I threw it for about a dozen or so games with the original factory shine, and liked the reaction – BUT – it wasn’t a big enough difference with my Spirit in the three houses I used it to warrant carrying both in the same bag. Sooo – I cut down some of the shine using my can of turtle-wax rubbing compound. I prefer the reaction with this slightly-dulled finish. It still gets through the heads OK but has a touch more bite in the back. I could break out the sandpaper and turn it into a premier “oil-ball”, but I already have a couple of Reaction Arcs, so I don’t need to fill that niche.
The new ICON was an experiment. I love my Faball Berry Razor, and I’ve been wanting to find a PBA legal replacement – something to go real long but still have some serious hit at the pins. I think the Razor is around a 2.59 or 2.6 RG ball, and I figured that drilling up a 2.544 Icon right over the bridge would give me a ball with an effective RG of around 2.58. Not perfect but close enough. I drilled up a 16# Icon with a 5” pin. This one was laid out 6-5/8 x 6-1/4, which place the pin just a fraction of an inch left of my centerline, and about 1-1/2” above the fingers. I threw it in league today and a few practice games afterwards, and it looks like it’s going to work out just the way I wanted. It goes looong and arcs easily into the pocket. The Razor is about a foot longer, but the Icon will probably be even better when the carry-down would force the Razor back into the bag. With this drilling, I will be limited to shots right of the 15 board, but it is going to be a great addition to my arsenal.
For those of you who were following the 7x5 thread in the Columbia forum, with this 6-5/8 x 6-1/4 layout, I am still 1” away from the thumbhole on the first oil ring. No danger either of hitting a finger hole. I think a 7x5 would have worked for me, or even a 7x6. However, the reaction is so mellow now that going into the “negative” region would be counter-productive. It would be akin to neutering a million dollar race-horse.

I drilled out an Icon two weeks ago.  I drilled the Icon label leverage and left it in box condition.  1st review is on the sport shot pattern.  This ball covered more ground than any of my other equipment.  It hit's harder than the ARC, thank god, and really turns the corner on the stripped back end.  I was able to play 20-10 and shot 807 for 4 games.  We oiled to 32' and then buffed to 37'.  2nd review is on the house pattern.  The house shot is oiled to 35' buffed to 40' with three units of oil from 1-5.  This ball had hold in the middle, but of course overreacted on the gutters which were to dry.  Even when swinging to the gutter, the ball gave me over/under.  I am a power stroker with a 3/4 track.  I was able to play 25-10 and the ball hit like a tank.  I shot 717.  This is a great ball for the stroker or tweener.  Those of us that don't put alot of hand in the ball the Icon will make the difference between weak 10's and strikes.  Go pick one up today!

Wonderful ball.  I drilled this 4 X 4 with an 8 inch hole and it goes long and really moves on the back end.  The things that has amazed me about this ball is how is throws pins around and carries.  First night out in league I shot a 300 with it.  That isn't the amazing part because 300 isn't too hard.  The cool thing was that I did it a a bowling center famous for corner pins.  But, with this new ICON I had no problems getting the 10's out!
I recomend this ball to anyone who is looking for that extra edge.

The last 5 or 6 balls I've bought in the past 6 months was through MIKE CIMBA, the Pro at NESBITS' LANES in PA. Although I've never met the guy, I've found him to be the most honest and knowledgeable Pro I've ever delt with.

I've had the ICON for a week and I've put about 40 games on it. The first 10 practice games I threw the ball was doing wonders, everytime I was close to the pockets .. the pins would fall. Stayed after the league throwing 10 practice games and it continued to amaze me.

Then I went to a league with the ICON and fell on my face. I was ready to give up on the ball. I couldn't get it to react the same way everytime I threw it.

Today I pulled it out for another league. The ball rolled beautiful .. hit like a Sherman Tank and recovered .. no matter how badly I threw it. Shot 659 and was very happy. Bowled 8 more games after the league and each game was over 200 with the ball blowing the pins away.

Excellent ball. Must tell you that I chose this ball only because I was so satisfied with the SPIRIT. Seems like COLUMBIA is on to SOMETHING!

nice ball.
i drilled sort of a leverage. pin a little down and out from the ring finger with the cg kicked slightly towards pap and below the midline
tried it out of the box first and for me(a tweener with spin in the fronts), it was squirty on wood lanes with new oil(dont exactly know what kind. heavier viscosicty).
i took the polish off with 1000 wet sand and wow what a difference.
the ball is alot of ball when slightly dulled. revs in the midlane and has no problems with recovery.

i then took it to a synthetic house with the same oil. a week earlier i had a hard getting a rev to hook on.
this time the lanes were a bit drier(i had learned they shortened the oil that day).
i moved into the 4th arrow and had no problems getting the ball down the lanes and recovering. still had plenty of hit left.

i then took my hand out of the ball and moved all the way to the right and noticed that the ball was very versital to releases as well as surfaces.
again, no problem getting this 1 through the heads and still had hold and room right.
i then took it to another league on wood lanes and when the carry down got to my rev, this ball stood up and read the lanes like a champ.
cant wait to get it on more oil.

just to sum it up, great ball that can fit any style with any surface.

I am a right handed 3/4 roller. Axis is 5 3/4 right 3 /16 up. Ball speed 18+ in heads, 16+ at pins. I get a lot of hand in the ball but do not normally cover a lot of boards.

My league average range from 215 to 225. I generally like to cover as few boards as possible.

Ball was used wood lanes. A tappered block with about 20 units in the middle to 3 outside ran to 24 feet and buffed to 35.

I had this ball drilled up on 8/21/02. Ball specs where 16lb 0 oz  with a 3 ½ " pin and 4 ¼ oz of top weight. I left it in the box condition (the compound finish) and drilled it with a label shift. The pin is a 2 o'clock 3 1/2 " from my PAP and the CG is 4 ½ " from the PAP. A small balance hole was needed and I ended up with ½ oz positive side and 5/8 oz of finger.

I first threw about 20 balls trying the ball out a fresh league condition. The ball did not hook as much as I expected. It did seem to rev up earlier than my other Columbia equipment but it still had a lot of length. I then used it later that same night in my 5 person scratch league. There were no early leagues that night so it was bowled on a fresh condition. While the ball still did not hook a lot I had a reasonable shot and reaction, stayed clean the first game and shot 219. This house is notorious for how fast the lanes breakdown and I had moved quite a bit during the first game. As the lanes dried out the ball began to shine. In the second game I started with the front 10 leaving a solid 8 on the 11th for 289. The third game I was clean again but 5 ten pins broke up strikes and shot 219 again.

I used the ball again this week in the same league but this time the lanes had been bowled on during the first shift. Again the ball seems to rev up earlier than my other Columbia equipment but doesn't seem to generate early hook. My mechanics were not nearly as good but still had a good reaction and shot 640 for the night.

Conclusions at this point is that at least out of the box this is not a big boomer of a ball in the hook department. It does seem to get into an earlier roll without early hook. With the early roll it seems to recover better from shots that are wide of target than some of my other equipment. Carry percentage has been good and the ball hits hard (sometimes to hard showing little respect to the pins).

Received my R&D Test Ball from our Dist. in early August and waited until now to give 2 reviews. I drilled mine 60 Degrees with the pin 4 1/2 from my pap. Axis is 4 7/8 by 1/4 South. Pinout 3" put the pin beside my ring finger.

House shot on syn. lanes of 38 feet of oil and clean backends made this ball very easy to read the lane. I could move 5 boards either way and still strike! The most impressive point was that at 40 feet I had at least 4 boards to carry from. This ball out of the box shinned needs dry boards to turn. Not flippy at all. This is the only particle ball I have thrown that doesn't read the lane early. Finally a particle for crankers!!

On a weekend of carrydown the only move was a couple boards right. Still didn't hook early and H.I.T.S. like a tank. The lower diff.of .038 will be suited for big handed players.

If you like Columbia products this Icon is a MUST for anyone that has a higher rate!! 5 1/2 pin to pap @ 75 degrees might get you that flippy feeling if you have burnt heads. This Icon will not hook in the heads or midlane shinned. Thanks again,Columbia for another great edition to your line...

After drilling another Icon for a female, I had to add another review. This Icon was drilled stacked 3 3/8 @ 75degrees and left box finish. With a axis of 5 3/4 by 1 1/2 north she couldn't wrinkle this ball on fresh oil and clean backends!! After 5 min. in the Haus with grey pads (800) still not much. Another trip to the Haus and 35 trizac for 5 min. resulted in a much better reaction. This still will not be the first ball out of the bag for a stroker. The diff. of .038 is too low for less handed people. On a league shot and into the 3rd. game she finally got a excellent arc reaction when the track burned up. She moved left in a little more oil and could hit the pocket again... This ball will hook early sanded and lose energy if played straight up the track (like anyother particle ball).

Great edition for Columbia. I will recommend the Icon to Higher rev rate players only. The cover adjusts very easily and can tweak it for most if you don't get to exotic with the drillings.

I disagree with most of the posts I've read on this ball.  It does hook quite a bit.  It's not huge, but it hooks quite a bit.  I have mine factory polished (shiny) and drilled stack leverage.  It may not seem that big to most, because it's strength doesn't lie in "swing and bring".  The Icon simply gives me push when there isn't much push to be had.  This is a first game ball for sure, and will continue to hit very well and charge the pocket on carry down.  A very versatile ball indeed.

Don't get me wrong, you can swing this ball, but I don't think that's the Icon's strength.  I love playing faders with this ball.  It's very smooth and not flippy at all.  The Icon seems to be the ball that everybody has gone out and bought this fall.  It's my go-to ball right now.  I can line up with this ball when I cannot line up with my other equipment.  During league play I generally start out with this ball, and then may come back to it later on or stay with it the entire set.  On some conditions it has had trouble carrying the ten pin.  This hasn't been the case too often.

Although it's a great go-to ball for me, during tournament play it doesn't give me that "special" reaction that many of my "condition balls" give me.  I've learned that many bowling balls that don't work as well in league play truly excel during tournaments.  Travelling to different centers around the state and even the country demands me to step out of what's "comfortable" for me, in most cases.  It's still a ball you have to take with you to every tournament because it will bail you out more often than not!

A solid release by Columbia 300.

I give this a split grade...
A for league play, 93%
B+ for tournament play, 89%

Set up two balls.   One LH and one RH.   Both balls 15#, 3" pin and around 3 TW.
Both balls 4 1/2 by 4 1/2, no hole.
The left hand guy is still in shock.   First ball he has ever been able to throw with a shine on it.   He usually sands everything with 400 grit.   RH guy can hit the pocket with anything.   Ball out of box gives pretty good length on 38' oil, AMF synthetics.   As with the Wicked, carry is good.   Both bowlers say they are getting strikes when they shouldn't.  First impression, it looks like a little bit like a "souped up" Wicked.  Would reccomend both the Wicked and the Icon (and I've never been a Columbia fan).   These two balls make the pocket a little "wider".

I purchased this ball for all the info I had heard, I am a stroker with medium ball speed use mostly dull stuff. My ball driller recommends this ball to me as the one to let me play other than the track. I can not wrinkle the ball either sanded nor glazed. Pins are kicked out right as I am a right hander, I purchased a Warrior and this ball absolutely rolls through anything drlling is pretty close to the same does anyone have an answer also the warrior is fresh out of the box. can anyone recommend another drilling perhaps. thanks

I needed a new ball,I wanted a voodoo but they was out so I got this ball im a faithful columbia man from way back, the pattern is left to right of the label pin is 3 in out with a weight hole this ball so far is junk  it only hooks on bone dry lanes any oil what so ever the ball skids and no hook im going have to sand it I guess and see what happens, the last 2 balls I got from columbia are junk im tired of paying 200+ for a ball and minimal results, I have a 210+ average and the speed is in the 14 to 16 range I seen a couple of other guys using this ball and with about the same results,so im done with columbia for a while time for a change ill update when I sand this ball.thanks THE CANNON

i was looking for a ball to replace my la nina, i have it polished so i figured polished particle was the way to go. i looked at all the stuff out and decided the icon was so ugly, i maybe the only person dumb enough to drill one. anyway, i drilled it 3 1/2 x 3 1/2. left the finish out of the box. threw a couple of shots with my la nina to get lined up, then changed to the icon. moved a little right with my feet, figuring it wouldn't hook quite as much as the la nina. the thing went right through the face, big 4. moved back to where i was with the other ball and bang, 10 in the pit. i have almost the exact same reaction. i tell ya. i don't think i could have found a better replacement for my la naina. i love my icon, and will surely recommend it to all my customers.

Got My ICON last monday, had it drilled to go long with a sharp snap.
Thank god i did, This thing is a hook monster!!!!!!!!!!
I have never had any luck in the past with polished balls, but when i got this i thought i would give it a go and see what happens, Lucky i kept it polished i would be in BIG trouble if it was dull. I can hit the 1 board with this and slum back into the pocket no worries!!
The Problem i'm having with it is, it's Too agressive it really needs oil.
So all the posts on here that are saying it doesn't hook. maybe it's just not drilled right!!

Columbia300 9/10 for this one.
Yet again you have done a great job

PRELIMINARY review-- I haven't had enough time with the ball yet to form a real, solid opinion-- this is a read from a couple of sessions on a 'house' condition ONLY.
As tested: 15 lb. "R&D Test Ball" labeled Icon- pin 3-5/8" from CG: Layout, pin over ring finger (4-1/2" from PAP), CG 1/2" right of grip center, no X-hole, box finish. I'm right-handed, medium speed, low revs.
After lining up with another ball, tried this ball and adjusted as needed. From another particle coverstock, I needed a 2-1 right move to hit the pocket; from a resin ball, I didn't need to move at all. Ball arcs nicely and controllably, but NOT very strongly. My strongest recommendation on this ball, so far, is for people who need practice shooting 10-pins: In a dozen and a half shots each, the particle left me two 10-pins, the resin left three; the Icon left 24 ten-pins in 30 flush hits. This includes the usual minor 'tweaks' I use for flush 10's, such as moving the lane target slightly in or out or raising or lowering the swing just a touch.

Once I get a chance to try it at length on a variety of conditions, I'll report back with an in-depth review; but on first pass, "it don't send me".

UPDATE:

Since the last review of this ball I posted, in which I mentioned leaving 24 stone 10-pins in 30 flush hits, I have taken the ball to the spinner and processed it through 320-grit, then 35-micron TriZact, then 10 micron TriZact. This seems to have done the trick, for the most part. I think it could still use a tad MORE surface, really, but it reacts (and CARRIES) a lot better slightly dull than it did with box finish. It does clean up easily, even dulled, and it does provide a nice smooth arc; but at the slightest hint of a carried-down puddle of oil in the back-ends, it fades like the Kirbys on the old "Topper" show--- even with more surface on it. This is unusual for a particle cover, and on the conditions I've seen, NOT terribly desirable.

Now, I see, they've already introduced an Icon-2, which reportedly has MORE back-end. Big surprise.

More later-

Drilled up my icon today and used it for six games today, four in practice and two on league night.

4 1/2 inch pin with 4 oz. top weight.

Drilled the ball with 3 3/4 cg and 5 3/4 pin, to the pap that is.
Dulled the box finish to 600 cross sanded.

The midlane and backend movement of this ball is simply amazing.  Transitions  very well from the oil to dry and even better from the oil to the carrydown.  As of right now, this is by far the best particle ball i have thrown.  I just hope the ball hold up.

Greatness

I have had two of these since their release.  Both 16lb 2oz, both pin out 4 inches, both 3 oz. top weight.

I attended a seminar in Kansas City about this ball, and liked what I saw as far as what made it different than previous Columbia Particles.  Me, with my higher rev rate, usually had a bit of trouble with high-load particle shells and early-burn.  I punched the first one in a 4 1/2 inch label drill, pin 4 1/2 inches from axis, cg in grip center.  The second was a 5 3/4 inch label drill, pin above bridge, and cg on grip centerline below grip center.

The first ball gave decent length polished, with a smooth backend reaction.  Sanded, it gave good read in the midlane, with the same backend reaction.  The problem:  not enough power at the pin deck.  I wasn't getting good enough kick on the end to get the 10 out.  I loved every other aspect, but the ball just didn't do it for me.

The second ball was altogether different.  It gave me better length, with an almost hook-set reaction.  Great backend and recovery, and HUGE hitting power.  The drill pattern made all the difference with this baby.  I could move way left and open up the lane really well with it, and I used it first ball out of the bag for a while.

All in all, I'll give the ICON a 9 out of 10 rating.  Great angle, good hit, loses that point because it doesn't handle oil like they said...I was slightly disappointed, but found that its strong points are away from soup anyway.

Have sold both since then, because the ICON 2 is supposed to be better.  We'll just see.

Got my Icon set up pin above the fingers, cg swung out the right, and I like to keep it polished.

I adore this ball.  This is the most versatile Columbia ball I've had (and I've had a lot). It hooks a lot and finishes hard but it hooks very predictably with a break point that's really easy to read.  Most of the Columbia balls I've had went long and snapped on the backend but this ball transitions much cleaner and smoother IMO. This ball also keeps a lot of energy through the pindeck and carries very well from any angle. I've played 25-10 with the ball successfully and I've played straight up the 3 successfully.

I don't like the way it reacts in heavier oil because it tends top go a little too long before it breaks (I have a Minotaur for really oily lanes).  I never tried the ball with a dull finish because I like the shined reaction so much!

The bottom line, this is the first ball out of my bag and I absolutely love it.

Have mixed opinions about this ball.
Shot this ball when the backends were really strong and loved it, but if there was carry-down or otherwise weak backends I could not get results. Dulling this ball was not the answer, the ball definetly needs to be kept polished for me. Currently this ball is in my do not throw pile. Friend who is a big-time cranker has had the same opinion.

Another ball that I have not changed the surface on.

I look at the Icon (in box condition) almost like a Pearl Rock On. It's HIT is tremendous, it gets down the lane well, and snaps really hard. For me, this ball is GREAT when you find the condition when it will score. It may be more versitile than I have seen since I have not touched the surface, but it will not move in oil. In HAS to have dry boards. Which is not bad, like I said, seems like a pearl Rock On to me.

I give it 8 1/2 out of 10. A MUCH better ball than alot of people on here gave it credit for.
Should I happen to try it sanded, I will post another review.

check my profile for specs. I punched up an Icon about 1 month ago. I put the pin 1 1/4 over my ring finger, and the cg 1 in up above my midline. At first, the box finish on the ball caused it to drive to hard and I left more 9 pins than 10 pins. So i sanded it to 320 grit, and first game like that I shot 300. after a couple weeks it would burn early and waste energy, so I went and polished it with Storm Xtra Shine.. I believe that's it, but anyways, it was the 3500 grit polish from storm. Now this ball goes exceptionally long and has a sharp little flip on the backend. I carries the corners very well and after about 35-40 games I haven't found any sign of "muscle death" yet. I can use this ball on almost anything except a flood, this ball is very versatile, and has been very popular to the bowlers up here in the northwest.

hook- 8

contorl- 9

versatility- 9

Icon gets a 9. As long as columbia can figure out how to keep their particle balls from dying after 50 games, they should be on the right track with this new sets of Icon bowling balls..

thanks for reading and hope this helps your selection

Got a question to all Columbia faithfuls, I have had my Icon (the OG model) for about 25-30 games, I took it down the 320-grit to get it to use a little energy in the heads and cut down on the back end. BAD IDEA. So I took it back to box finish and it just plain doesn't react anymore. As anybody else experienced a problem like this? If so how can you fix it? I just had an ICON 300 drilled up and will test it tonight, so I need to drop the ICON down to a medium oil ball. If anybody has any suggestions please e-mail me.

Thanks

WOW, this ball is great.  It has a very nice hook potential and the reaction is just beautiful.  So far I've thrown 3 nights with it and all three of them would have been amazing if I knew how to adjust, but when they were fresh and i didn't have to move this ball is godlike.  I shot 610, 639, and 740 with this ball; obviously made the right adjustments in the 740 unlike the other two when I went from about 270 the first game down to 190 (ARGH!).  Well anyhow, this ball is great it has a nice arcing reaction, not too flippy and can play right through all the soup with ease.  Exceptional carry if you ask me, but then again nowadays what ball doesn't carry when it's relatively new?  Ok, I've spoken my mind on this ball and I highly reccomend it to all fans of Columbia and all bowlers who want to score well because this ball really does a great job of helping to put up great numbers!

I got this ball drilled to go long and snap, to compliment my Rockstar. well it certainly did go long and it def. came back.  I avged. 218 with this for my High School Team.  This ball hits, and when i say hits, i mean like this is an atom bomb when it hits the pocket.  This ball is very controllable in most conditions.  I shot 288 and 781.  with this ball it is definelty a keeper

pin right above ring finger, cg on center of grip.

box condition, this ball is probly my fav. ball i've ever thrown.  it reved so easy and got down the lane nice then exploded left and tore up the pocket.  1st 3 games with it were 737.   ...that was when it 1st came out

but, being the smart person i am, i tryed to polish it a little, to use it more on in the house i bowl at.   WRONG MOVE.  once again, i can't come close to getting it back to the way it was, if someone knows the secret...please inform me on how to get the reaction back.

now, it has the same reving ability that i love about it and great length, just....not much backend.  i'm going to have to keep it in my locker unless i bowl on drier lanes

This is my second review on the same ball. The difference is that I sanded it down to 800 grit (scotchbrite).

I do not know why alot of people have had trouble with this ball. This thing hits harder dull than it does with the box surface. Dull, the break point is more consistant, and it still gets very good length. When it was polished, it slammed the pins back, dull it throws the pins all over, more messengers mean more strikes usually.

I was very close to selling this ball. I have far too many in the group that this ball was in when it was in box surface. Dull, this thing is great. Length, hit, carry, messengers, and consistancy...I am not sure you need too much more than that.

Specs:
15 lb.
2" pin

Drill specs:
5 1/2 X 5 1/2 (label, pin over bridge)
Box finish (shiny)

OK, this ball is old and somewhat girly looking.  I won it for the last session of our Sport league for having the most match play points(the other companies gave us their newest stuff, Columbia gives us closeouts....nice).

Anyway, I haven't had much success with Columbia particles since the Extreme Chaos, so I tried a high RG drilling to see if I could get one of these things to turn a corner.

Nope.

Don't know if it's my rev rate or what, but I can't get any Columbia particle to recover, period.  However, this ball will fill a nice niche for me, just not the one intended.

I threw this in the first night of my men's league to see what it would do on a house shot (36' Christmas tree).  It stunk on the fresh, wanted to hook early when I tried to play fairly straight, whiffed the head pin when I tried to open up.

I tried it again later in the set, and the early hook brought it to life somewhat.  On a condition where my Monster Frenzy jumped early, the Icon read the lane smoothly and made a nice, smooth move to the hole.  Problem was as they dried out, you still couldn't send it out and get it back.

I would think this would be a great dry sport shot ball or a good ball on super wet/dry.

Overall, I'm really losing faith in Columbia particles.  Until I see a change, I will go with anybody else's.

I'm not entirely sure why I've never reviewed this ball before... so I know it's a little late, but here we go.

Drilled it up with the pin directly to the right of my ring finger, CG in my grip. I was looking for something to replaced my chewed-up Reaction Ricochet. Based on most of the specs Columbia had put out this ball should have fit that role nicely.

In reality, I'd say this ball might be a little tamer than my Ricochet (which had the same drilling). The Icon has great length, but never seems to grab and take off the way the Ricochet did. The only time it ever gets a true skid/snap reaction is with totally flooded heads and screaming backends. On a normal house shot this ball just sort of floats, recovers, and glides back to the left.

Contrary to what has been said over and over, this ball hasn't died on me yet. I think that might be due in large part to the way I keep it polished and continuously clean it.

In bowling circles around here the Icon is known as the "cheater ball", because it seems to fit so universally wherever it's thrown. If you are looking for one ball that can come out of your bag a good 75% of the time, look no further.

I got this ball used a year ago and this ball is a reliable ball for me. It hooks hard all a lot of shots but it doesn't hit very hard but never the less it is a good old ball that I would recomend to anyone who is looking for a reliable columbia ball.

Alright, Ive had this ball for probably atleast 4 years now.  The reason I got it was I was in a junior league and another guy was throwing one.  I was really taken back on how this ball exploded the pins!  It was crazy.  So, I decided to pick one up NIB-Got it for pretty reasonable.  Pin over ring, 16-18,Stroker.  I noticed that if i threw the ball a little more direct i would have a better shot and more carry.  When throwing this ball out it seemed to burn up a little and hit like a wet diaper, haha. After quite a few games on it,  it basically died.  Just soaked up too much oil and had no more hitting power. So, i had did the hot bath method to try to bring it back to live and wa la good as new!~ I would recommend this ball to anyone, but you have to keep it clean.  Collects oil and debris very easily.

I just brought this oldie but goodie last week and I'm impressed. Here I am looking all over the world for a Mission, this baby is one of the smoothest rolling balls I've owned in a while. With this Icon I have room for error and it still hit the pocket. Now I'm looking for an Icon 2. I wish I had this baby a long time ago. Sent from my cell so may have bad spelling. Nice job with this one, its now my second favorite behind my Total NV.
