Melt Down Ball Review
The Melt Down is the newest addition to the ‘Down’ line by Columbia 300. This ball features a very vibrant color scheme with its yellow, orange, and purple mix. These colors stand out, and everyone will know what ball you’re using. The colors have a nice blend while rolling down the lane, and do not make reading ball reaction difficult at all. I’ve always appreciated the ability for the team at Columbia 300 to put together vibrant colors that blend very nicely while rolling down the lane.
The Melt Down features the same core as all the other balls this line, the SD Medium RG, which has a RG of 2.51 and a Differential of .053 on a 15 pound ball. What is different about this ball compared to the others is the cover stock. The ball features the Bring-it MAXX cover. This cover stock creates friction much earlier than any of the other balls in this series, making it the strongest ball of them.  As like all the other balls in this lineup, it drives through the pins and strikes a lot.
In comparison, my personal favorite in this lineup is the Take Down at 1000 grit. Using the Melt Down at box finish, I am at least 3-5 boards left of where I would normally start with the Take Down. The Melt Down out hooks any ball at this level and hits just as hard as all the others. This core is one of the best ever, and every ball with it drives through the pins with great success. Visit your local pro shop and pick one of these up, you won’t be disappointed.

First off, let me say I’m glad to be back bowling after a severe back injury has sidelined me for over 2-months and just in time for C300’s newest release in the Meltdown.  For the diehard Columbia fan this new nugget simply hooks.  It is the best ball I have seen for oil in a long time.

The Meltdown is in the Upper-Mid performance category. The SD Medium Rg Core is covered by the aggressive Bring-It MAX cover-stock.  This combination provides for proven traction down lane with consistent roll in the mid-lane.

My results:  Although my injury and arsenal needs have not permitted me to fully utilize this ball, I can safely say that the times I have been able to roll the Meltdown the results have been outstanding.  Being a tweener and from the Mid-Atlantic, there are not too many leagues with THP’s that actually put down enough oil for the Meltdown to be used for 3 games.  So taking that into consideration, I set it up for tournaments and those occasions that call for that extra traction and perhaps a target location a few boards inside the track area.  The 70 x 4.5 x 40 layout with out of box finish, has enabled me to fill a part of my bowling arsenal that needed help.

One of the biggest pluses that I can say at this point is that the Meltdown travels well through the latter portion of the lane with striking action and consistency (pun intended).  Usually I tend to lose carry when forced to move towards board 20…but not with the Meltdown.  It has taken that fear or lack of confidence away.  My next experiment will be to see what reaction I have after polishing.

With all being said, I truly believe the Meltdown has a definite place in everyone’s bowling arsenal.  It’s one of those balls you just gotta have.

The all new Columbia 300 Melt Down features the same great core found in the rest of the "Down" line (Smack Down, Take Down, Throw Down) and a new, more aggressive overstock to help cut through heavier oil. Bowlers have loved how versatile the Smack Down core is and even though this ball is wrapped in a much more aggressive version of the Bring-It overstock, it still looks phenomenal for a wide variety and caliber of bowlers! I drilled a pin-up version as well as a pin-down version for tournament play and on this particular ball I used longer than average pin-to-PAP lengths just because the cover is so strong. My pin-up version uses a 5.5" pin with a 60 degree drill angle and a 30 degree VAL angle. Even with the very long pin it still turns the corner extremely well and stores plenty of energy to drive clear through the pin deck on any typical house shot, as well as the longer or heavier volumed sport patterns. My pin-down Melt Down uses a 4 7/8" pin-to-PAP and a 65 degree drill angle and a 65 degree VAL angle. This puts the pin below my ring finger and gives me a good heavy roll when I want to be able to cut through a lot of oil, but tame down the back end reaction to make it a little more stable. Its been best suited for fresh house and sport patterns when you really need to stay out of trouble. This all also ready the mid lanes about two feet sooner than my pin-up version so it allows me to see where the "hook spot" is just a little earlier. All in all I would have to say I have been incredibly impressed with this new addition to Columbia's Upper-Mid price point and it's sure to be a winner in the very near future!

The Meltdown is HOOK, HOOK and MORE HOOK and is the latest ball in the "Down" line and it does not disappoint.  I have never seen a ball hook from anywhere like this ball does.  If you miss right this ball with help but if you get it in it will hook high almost every time.  I drilled mine pin high for a little length and you will need it with the strong hooking motion it creates at the end of the pattern.  This might not be the ball for you on lower volume patterns but if you bowl on heavier oil this is a great piece to have in you bag.  I have found the best area to play with the Meltdown is in as when you try to play straighter it revs up way to fast to stay right of the head pin.  This ball also hits like a Truck with great pin action.  I would say this would be a great ball to use at the Nationals and look forward to seeing what mine can do there.  If you want more info go to www.columbia300.com or contact me with any questions.

My absolute favorite ball in years! I have one pin under bridge and one pin above bridge. They are the perfect 1-2 punch for me. I have a little higher speed and moderate revs. (320 rev and 18-19 speed) The Meltdown is a perfect piece for me. When I need length and more backend I use the pin up and when I need earlier roll and the lanes are fresh and tight I go to the pin under. I have never had so much success with a ball than I have had with the Meltdown. If you are a bowler looking for some more hook without going overboard and don't tend to usually hook the ball much due to speed or lack of rev rate then get yourself a Meltdown. You will not be disappointed!!

Review:
This ball is aggressive in the back part of the lane. I found this ball to cover many boards while providing a good "kick" on the backend. It's more like a hard arc in my opinion. With this layout, I tend to play a fresh house shot (42 feet) HPL's starting roughly 13/12 at the arrows out to 8 at the breakpoint of 45 feet. On flatter medium distance (38 - 42) patterns, this ball excels quite well as long as there is oil up front. The core tends to stands up sooner which provides exceptional control. One word of caution here is when the heads begin to dry up and the oil pushes further down lane, this ball will need to be put away. It soaks up oil like a sponge so be prepared. This ball has great shelf appeal, is exciting to throw and watch all the colors "Melt Down".
