Columbia 300(r) announces the introduction of the ROCK ON(tm). The ball is
available immediately and cleared for PBA regional competition beginning
January 12 and national competition January 15. The ball features Columbia's
TEC2(tm) cover stock. The ROCK ON is available in Deep Purple with Peach
engraving. It is available in weights of 12-16 lbs. The ROCK ON is one hook
monster designed for heavy oil. It features the TEC2 (patent pending) shell.
The secret lies in the new core shape and heavily loaded TEC2 particle
shell. The core concentrates the weight near the center of the ball for
maximum roll. The large, dense flip block adds to the flare potential for
more hook. This ball has a .052 differential Rg for 5-6 inches of flare. The
high TEC2 particle loading puts more teeth in the shell to bite through the
heavy oil. This ball will grab the lane through the oil for a mid lane hook
and create a strong curving backend. The ROCK ON offers a hook rating of 28.

Well last night Chris throw the Rock On for the 1st time. The ball was drilled with the CG 2 3/8" for PAP and the Pin 5 1/8" from the PAP. The ball was hit with a Grey Scotch Brite pad.

I watched Chris throw the ball all night. We bowl on 2nd shift condition, with heavy oil in the middle and blend to dry gutters.

Chris was able to stand deep inside and lay the ball down around 30 and send it out to around 7 and then get it back. This ball is about 3 boards stronger than the Rock Star. The Rock On had stronger backend as the night went on, but a few boards adjustment was all that was needed. Throughout the night the ball was still able to clear the heads without losing energy.

The Rock On core revs up and give you a good read of the lane. On a Scale of 1-10, I would give this ball an 8. It is still early and I am sure Chris will shine it to get a closer comparison to the Rock Star.

Thanks

Bill

This ball does Rock ON or hook on and on and on.  I drilled mine 4 X 4.  I knew that with that drilling I would get enough flare, but not as much as the ball is capable of giving.  The condition I have thrown this ball on is the standard crown.  There were about 60 - 80 units in the middle out to around 5 - 8 outside 7.

I wanted to be able to compare it to my Rock Star, but that just isn't very possible when the Rock ON hooks like you wouldn't believe.  By the time I found anywhere to throw it, I ended up being around 13 boards more on the approach and 15 boards more on the lane than my Rock Star.  So needless to say, I ran back into the shop and shined it the best that I could.

After I shined it, the ball obviously did not hook as much, but it still hooks more than anything I have ever thrown.  I was amazed that it gets through the heads as smoothly as it did.  However, once it hit midlane, it starts to hook and just doesn't stop.  I was very impressed with the strong move it makes at the break point.  It is continuous and hard.  The carry seemed to be very good whether you hit high or light.  This has continued to be the case after I have thrown it for many games.

I was able to compare it to my Rock Star after I shined the Rock ON.  Even after shining it, I was consistently 8 boards left on the approach and 8 -10 boards left on the lanes with the Rock ON.

The Rock ON seems as though it would be a great ball for someone who needs the extra pop.  For myself, I still try to throw it, but I haven't been as successfull with it as I have been with some other equipment of mine.  I just don't see enough oil to throw it more.

For those of you that need to know, my PAP is 4 3/4 X 1/2 down.  I have average speed and more than average revs.

Well after drilling a ton of balls from the Rock line for my customers with only minimal disappointment, I had to drill a Rock On for myself. I was looking for a ball that I can get into the deep oil without getting any squirt. I am a power player with a low track and my PAP has changed a little since a hand injury. My PAP is now 4 3/4> and 1/8"^. I drilled the Rock on with a 4 1/2" x 3 1/2" layout with the MAss in the strong position. It weighs back to 1/2 pos. side and 1/8 finger with the extra hole 1" past the VAL. The surface was left out of box. This ball does not come sandblasted for a big oil ball. I threw it on my house pattern that is a 42' pattern with a ton of soup in the middle. I was able to play 17 at the arrows and get the ball out to about the 8-9 at 42-44 ft. with ease and this ball recovered very good without losing alot of energy at the pocket. I left 1 10 pin and a few 9 pins that I usually leave as commonly as most people leave 10's so that was expected. I really didn't have much trouble getting this ball down the lane on the fresh stuff and I was able to stick with it the entire night. I tried to use it on a second shift but it just started reading way too early. I could have bumped really deep but we are in the position round weeks of the league so I used a different ball that gave me a little better look. I have drilled about 5 of these so far and all the people who bought them are very pleased. I would hesitate to drill this tooo aggressive for a stronger hand for fear of burnout but the cover does look like it will shine fairly easily. I would give this ball an 8 out of 10 for Oilier conditions. A good matchup of core to cover in my eyes for this area. Hope this review helps a few that read it.  Beans

After posting this review I went to a Scratch Tournament this past Sunday.

I bowled qualifying the 2nd squad and I couldn't use this ball because the lanes were very spotty up front so I didn't even pull it out of the bag. I made the cut using a Power Bolt. They re-oiled after the qualifying and there was a big puddle in the middle so I pulled out the Rock On in practice and had a decent look with it so I decided to use it. Well I went 258,229,259,275 to qualify 3rd in the top 5 stepladders.(I know it was a shootout but still, this ball gave me more room than any other ball) In the stepladders I had the best reaction of all the finalists because the track burnt up and the middles were to souped up for the other players and I was able to get really deep and just open up the WHOLE lane. I climbed the ladder to win the tournament for $1,100 with scores of 237-226, 248-212 and 264-216 in the title match. I can honestly say that if I didn't have this ball in my bag I wouldn't have won the tournamet. Way to go Columbia. Beans

First my specs, 12-13 mph, 11-12 rev 75 axis, 50 degree tilt righty so my ball usually go long and without a lot of rev, normally have to play down and in on a top hat 50/10 oil pattern. Well people like myself always wish they could move inside like the crankers but we never have enough hand to carry the 10 pin and sometime not even the 5 pin.  Well, with the Rock On all of this has changed.  I have thrown it twice on flooded conditions between 10 and 10, took it up 3rd arrow, goes through the fronts and middles easily and when it gets to the dry makes a nice HARD turn taking everything out including the 5 and 10.  As the lanes begin to get carrydown it doesn't seem to effect this ball.  I had it sanded to 600 from box finish to help my weak hand on the back end.  If you don't have a lot of rev and have a medium to low ball speed this ball will allow you to move inside with the crankers.   I missed right on one shot by about 6 boards, it hit the dry and came all the way back to clear the rack.  It won't out hook the Evolution tour but it will cover a lot of boards on errant shots outside.

well lets just say this is my first jump into tec(columbia) particle.

personal stats

pap- about 5 /14 over and 3/8 up

average speed and rev's

the ball has a 4 inch pin

drilled the ball

5x4

this gave the ball thumb weight so i added an extra hole 2" below my pap to take it out and end up with about 1/4 finger.

I also shined the ball, it hooked up to early and didnt have much for the backend.

I bowl on sythetics (wet/dry)and wood(christmas tree).

If i bowled on solid oil, i would have not shined, but since most house shots are not flooded( i hit it with 800 polish)

I like the ball a lot- not most versatile(that could be predicted), but definitely a keeper. Used for 3 set on sythetics-690, 660, 620( i need to put it in the bag earlier during breakdowns) averaging 245 for the first games.

On the wood

used 2 times

231-265-237=733

245-288-257=790

seems to be working great

i would recommend the slower speeds put the pin somewhere above the fingers(5") for the added length

I am a stroker, 16 mph. Typical shot is down and in. Bowl on both wood and synthetic. Both are oiled to 36 feet 10 to 10. Ball was drilled for maximu leverage. Purchased this ball as I have the black rock and the pearl. Struggled with this ball from the get go. Tried both box finish and 600 grit on both the wood and synthetic. For me this ball went longer then the black rock. I tried several different hand positions to no avail. Pin reaction was less then either the black rock or the rock pearl, for me. The good news was I got a lot of practice shooting the corner pins. I could not carry either the 7 or 10 pin. For me to carry the ball had to be placed perfectly in the pock. The only way I achieved any reaction was to slow down to under 15 mph to give it more time. Located another stroker with a slower speed then me and gave it to him and he loves it. Not a keeper for me.

Drilled mine with a 5 1/2 x 4 pattern, no extra hole. The pin was far out so that is the reason why the pin was 5 1/2 away (above fingers). I polished this ball with Black Magic to reduce the early hook that I had with it.  Well i was able to use this ball only by keep it strictly in the oil and keeping it away from the dry boards. When I missed to the dry the got into such a hard roll, and spent too much energy and wouldn't carrythe corners. However when I kept the ball in the oil, it never lost energy and got into such a heavy roll that I couldn't help but strike with it. From what I have seen with both my ball and those that I have drilled for customers is that this ball works well for power players on heavy oil, finally a ball that just doesn't quit. This ball is certainly much stronger of roll than the original black rock.

HOOK HOOK and more HOOK

Drilled 3 x 3 3/8
Pin about an inch left of ring cg stacked under
Hole on PAP

TOP to Side 1  -  1/2

This ball has the most hook I have seen to date more than
my Evolution Tour it does not stop

It has way above average carry
It rolls earlier in this drilling I have but it
doesnt have a tendency to roll out.

Playing deep inside on easy house conditons is a breeze.

Overall awesome ball except for dry lanes

I bought one of these balls about 4 weeks ago to replace a Danger Zone HPH. While I liked the HPH, the cover was too difficult to tweek in order to obtain the desired ball reaction. I am using a 600 finish worked over with acetone to smooth out the surface just a little. I like the fact that I can change the surface finish to anything from polished to 220 (if I was crazy enough) very easily, in order to adjust for various lane conditions.
I am a stroker, carrying a 176 book average, using a 15 pound ball. My ball speed is medium to high, with medium revolutions, and a medium axis tilt. My home house has synthetic lanes, and generally runs medium oil. I had the ball drilled with Pin out to 3 inches, pin to axis of 3 3/8 Inches, c/g to axis at 3 3/8 inches and a weight hole 2 inches beyond the PAP. It was drilled this way to maximize flare through the length of the lane, producing a hard arc.
I have enjoyed using the ball a great deal, rolling some pretty decent series with it. Though it is advertised for heavy oil, I found good control on medium oil as well, though I have to move to the 25 board with the 6 pin as my target. The ball tends to go long with good snap at the end, giving a solid impact into the pocket. I have left fewer 10 pins than with my other balls becuase this ball has also produced good carry. It very nicely compliments my other two balls (Columbia300 Mass Chaos, and Ebonite Trimax 3).
I highly recommend the ball for all but crankers, unless they have a lot of ball speed (the ball might very well start hooking at their feet).
On a scale of 1 to 10 I give the ball a solid 9.5 on medium to heavy oil. However, for dry lanes I wouldn't consider using it, but then it wasn't intended for dry lanes.

See my profile for bowler stats. I bought this ball out in Reno, and had it drilled stacked leverage.I wanted a ball that would give me a (little) area on the left side, when there is a tougher, flatter oil pattern. On a lot of tournament conditions, the left side  has an out of bounds anywhere outside the 2nd arrow, and a lot of lefties struggle to get the ball to the pocket. There may not be another lefty bowling on a pair, to help change the shot.
Analysis: I'd heard that this ball is strong in the soup, and I will agree. At the ABC's, I tried it during the 5 minute practice time, but couldn't get a comfortable line with it, and you don't want to spend any time fishing for a shot. Back home, I've been playing a 3rd arrow shot, out to about the 10 board. Lining up any further left on a house shot, and this ball will hook too early. If you line up and play inside the oil line, the ball is at it's best. This ball has a nice, strong arc, with no quit. This ball does not skid-flip. It revs smoothly all the way down the lane, and makes the turn with a lot of power, and kicks the corner pin out with authority. One of the harder hitting balls that I've thrown. Very easy to rev, lots of power, great oiler. Not so good on a drier shot, unless you've got a cannon for an arm. My first Columbia purchase in many years. If you really want (or really need) a strong ball, this is a good choice.

This ball hooks a lot and thsi is the best ball for when the lanes are flooded with oil and if the lanes are like that and you need a ball for that go with the Rock On it will have no problem getting thru that oil and getting to the pocket. It is also a great bal if you shine it up and could work on medium to light oil ball.

So if ou need a ball that is a great combo for all oils get the Rock On.

I give thsi ball a 9 1/2 out of 10 a great ball.

It is official........my X-it has burnt out!! But nevertheless have I regrouped myself and tried to work on my mechanics....but failed ........So I gave up on the X-it and decided to purchase another ball.

I took a trip to AMF Bay Shore to see Chris Keller and he said either the Angle Extra, Rock On, or the Trauma ER.  The thing is.....my original Columbia (Xtreme Chaos) didn't burn out like the X-it....(I just outgrew the Xtreme)

To make a long story short.....(I don't do that often.....just ask A. Warren)...the ball goes long and snaps hard in the back.  It is a good ball for a first shift shot at the center I'm bowling at but can always rely on my good friend Trimax II to use when it dries up.

Good ball overall

I use this ball only when the lanes are very oily or when I need to move inside.  I have found that this ball is very good for oily heads and carrydown conditions.  The oily heads allow the ball to skid a bit and retain energy for the backend.  Once reaching the backend it makes a nice and controllable turn to the pocket.  This ball doesn't jump to the pocket for me it has more of a roll into the pocket.  I have found that between the 3rd and 4th arrow is the best line for me with this ball but I have seen others with more hand than me swing the ball from as far as 25 out to about 8 or 10 with a nice line to the pocket.

If you have a need for a good oil ball this is worth looking at.  Mine Rock-On is 16#, drilled with the pin above the ring finger and has finger inserts and a thumb slug.  It is a very playable ball that allows me to have a shot on wet lanes and carrydown conditions.

I hope this helps.
