Excerpt:
Ultimately, the Columbia 300 Saber Pearl proved to be a very nice middle of the road pearl. Offers control that we’ve become used to from Columbia 300 but with decent pop downlane. For high rev bowlers and tweeners, this ball fits very nicely in the middle of an arsenal, while still being an asym. I like having that option as most of the time, the middle balls go to symmetric. For lower rev bowlers, it will be a ball down for medium to lower volumes. For Columbia 300 fans, I think this ball will sell itself.

COMMENTS

New to Columbia’s Orange Line collection, the Saber Pearl features the Reflex Pearl coverstock along with the new Dynamix Core that was released on the Saber last summer. The Reflex Pearl coverstock seems to be stronger than the older Bend it Pearl coverstock that was used on former Columbia’s pearl bowling balls, making the ball read a tad sooner and providing a ball that can still be used on fresh oil patterns and keeping the ball in front of you by playing in the oil versus some other pearl ball that must be thrown into the friction early to get the ball to react.
I decided to drill the Saber Pearl with one of my favorite layouts, pin above the bridge with both the pin and CG on the midline. For me this puts the pin 5 ¼ from my PAP. With this setup, the Saber Pearl has been very versatile and can be played with straighter angles or giving me very good recovery down lane if I want to open the lane up and hook the ball more. This ball is still fairly strong & continuous off the break point, but considerably smoother on the back end for my game than the Lit Pearl on most conditions.   I have used this ball on a variety of conditions, from house shots to sports shots, from fresh oil to early friction heads, all to get a good read on it. My favorite characteristic of this ball is that it is very clean through the heads, even when the lanes have had significant play, yet the ball is still good at picking up in the mid lane and gives recovery to the outside without over bouncing off the friction.  Love having that look and reaction bag in my bag.

Likes: Super clean through front part of the lane.  Allows me to trust it and stay right and know that it wont over react.  I usually pick this ball up game 2 or 3 of league has just the right amount of bite.

Dislikes: None so far.

Likes:I started with this ball to the right in the dry. It was very clean in the fronts, as expected, but due to the mids being broken down, it snapped off really hard. As I migrated left, once I got to enough oil to get through the mids, it was very over/under for me. Face or barely touch the head pin. I took it to 1000 and lightly polished it and it was amazing. Totally tamed it down. This ball still cornered hard and hit like a truck. It didn’t matter if I threw it off the cliff or kept it in the oil. I think this will be a great ball for either the league or tournament player once the proper surface is there.

Dislikes: I will probably get this back to factory surface and just use it for late day tourneys. If I want one for league, I’ll have to get another as I don’t want to keep changing the surface.
