727 w/ Momentum Out of the Box
« on: February 29, 2008, 02:42:09 PM »
I drilled up a Momentum today with a 4.5 in pin to PAP with the CG in the palm (pseudo MB left of the thumb) and threw a few games in practice with it.  This ball was reacting just as I hoped it would, it got through the heads cleaner than my Rival does and is a little stronger on the backend, but still very controllable.  I could also strike from almost any angle, which was a plus.  I proceded to bowl with it in league at a different house where "straighter is greater" as far as carry goes and shot a nice 727 with it (215-249-263).  I've haven't thrown it enough to post a review yet, but I like what I see so far.

I also bought a Wrath Dead Flush with a 5" drill and the CG kicked out just a little bit for when the lanes burn up in the front.  I really didn't throw this one enough to get a read on it yet, but chances are I'll get my chance over the next few days.

I have the momentum and the dead flush both are excellent balls.  I just shot 713 with my dead flush last night that I drilled up a week ago. Great job on your 727.

cg out = for when the fronts burn up??

Or is it the 5 inch pin to pap and up that handles that??

As far as the Dead Flush goes, the theory is that the longer pin to PAP helps with the burn along with the fact that the pin is way above the fingers and the coverstock is a little harder than most balls on the market right now.  The CG is only kicked out a little bit to give it a little extra kick on the back (or so I think).  I went with the pro shop operator's recommendation and this is a guy I've worked with for a few years now that I trust.   From what I've seen of it so far, it's very quick off of the friction (maybe a little too quick), but I haven't thrown this one enough to get a feel for it yet.

I used the Momentum in our City Masters tournament today and shot 814 for 4, but it wasn't nearly enough to make the cut.  The backends were flying a little too much for the Momentum, probably should've used the Rival, but I was stubborn.  As far as comparing the length of the Rival vs the Momentum, I would say the Momentum is slightly longer, probably in the 3 to 5 ft range, but the key is that it gets through the heads a little cleaner, even on the burn.  Keep in mind that my Rival has a light polish over the 4000 grit surface.

I was very impressed with the Rival and Resurgence that I used over this season and I decided to go with a mostly Columbia arsenal.  These new balls just match up to my game better than anything else I've ever thrown.  I have a significant amount of Storm Equipment that is about to be donated to the local Jr program due to the fact it doesn't match up to my game as well.  It's a learning curve in figuring out which ball to use when, etc.  But I've never felt that I have the possibility of throwing an honor score with any ball in my bag like I do with the Momentum, Rival and Resurgence.  I'll probably add the Dead Flush to that list when I've thrown it a little more.

I think in terms of handling oil, they can handle the same amount (with the same surface), it just depends on what type of reaction you're looking for.  If you want more midlane roll and a smoother backend, the Rival is for you.  If you're looking for more backend reaction and a cleaner look through the heads, than the Momentum is the better way to go.

Keep in mind that I polished my Rival because of the lane conditions I see in Tucson.  OOB it just starts up too early, so if you're talking OOB surface, than the Rival is better in oil than the Momentum because of the duller surface.  But with the same surface finish, they are similar in how much oil they can handle, but the Rival is more midlane and the Momentum is more backend.
