Apparently I am a Columbia man now.
« on: August 08, 2004, 08:04:57 AM »
I just got back from the pro shop where I had 5 Columbia balls punched.  Different spans, different layouts, different thumb pitch.  Here's what we got:

Formula - This ball is way strong.  The only way it worked on the THS for me was to move way in and give it a lot of room.  It hit like a friggin truck.

Ti Traction - Good strong particle ball that was pretty agressive in the middle of the lane where there was oil.  Once I got it outside to the dry, it was over.  The result was usually some 4-6 variety of split.  This will be a good ball to use on tour.

Panic - this ball came to me directly from the factory with a 1" pin.  Not a bad thing, considering I wanted this ball to be less agressive for drier lanes.  Nice skid through the heads before turning over and pushing through the pins.

Fear - a very good medium oil ball.  Nice predictable roll/reaction.  Nothing fancy, just a good overall ball.

Shock - only one word for this ball - HIT!  The first time it left my hand, it absolutely lived up to its name.  There were people literally coming from the other end of the house to find out what in the hell was going on.  Cheesy, I know, but they had a look of shock at what they heard and saw.  This ball is big time.

I'm going to throw them all a bit more tomorrow evening; I didn't get the opportunity to to try a bunch of different trajectories before family duty called.  I'll post actual reviews for all balls after I've had the opportunity to try each one a little more at length.

Why would you get 5 different balls drilled with 5 different spans and thumb pitches?

It's late.  Go to bed, come back tomorrow refreshed and ask yourself if you really think I would get 5 different pitch/span combinations on 5 new balls.

Honestly.

I have got a Panic coming in this week for some drier
conditions and I was wondering what was the hit and
carry like on yours?

I read that the same way at first DP3.  I think he meant that all 5 balls were drilled with the same new span/pitch setup.  It does read like they are all different.

Different spans, different layouts, different thumb pitch.

Small correction, the Ti Traction uses enhanced Superflex, so it's resin, not particle.

You've got to love the ambiguity of language.  Believe it or not, I study this kind of stuff and still screw it up.  (For example, how do YOU interpret the sentence, "I hit the man with the umbrella."?)

Anyway, the fact of the matter is that I had all five balls drilled with the same span, a span that differs from my previous span.  I used to have a stretched span with lots of reverse pitch in the thumb (remnants from the urethane age).  I've shortened my span and decreased the reverse pitch to fit modern equipment.

Each ball has a condition-specific layout that will be a lot more effective on Tour conditions.

Apologies for the goof on the Ti.  I guess I read a little to much into the review on Columbia300.com.

Brockette - I'll let you know after I get a chance to throw it a little more.  From all indications, with the layout I've got, it goes long, but really winds up at the end and lets the pins have it.

Pin,

Could you talk a little about the Shock versus the Formula and describe each a little more!

Both sound exciting to me.

I've seen Shock in action and I've thrown Fear.

Shock is like the Wow, but it actually saves energy!  What a concept.  Clears the heads good for a dull ball, starts up midlane and charges very hard.  Similar to a Rush from Roto-Grip or a Super Charge from Storm.  The Formula is more of an Angular solid IMO than the Shock.
