Action Packed w/ Rico drilling?
« on: March 28, 2008, 03:34:47 AM »
I'm thinking of drilling an Action Packed with the RICO layout, but I'm looking for feedback from anyone who has tried this on this ball.

Why are people so fascinated by the RICO layout ??? I just don't get it because there's no way in #@$$ that I could use a ball with that layout in Tucson.  It would just puke so bad on the backend and I'd probably leave solid 5s all day long.  If you have some nice oil, I can see it, but that just doesn't happen here.  Is there places in the USA where it's not bone dry all the time.

I see medium/heavy oil all the time in three out of my four leagues, actually.  I took an old Storm Eraser Banshee and threw a pin-in-palm layout on it (no x-hole), but also tried an experiment with the thumb.  I couldn't throw it because of the terrible thumb feel (it's at the shop getting fitted for switch grips like the rest of my equipment), but I loved the way it rolled for me.  I actually had problems with leaving stone 9 pins because it was SO strong and continuous on the backend.

CHawk,

Have you tried a ball drilled Rico yet???? You might be surprised that it won't hook at your feet like you think it might.

I bowl in a house the has med/heavy oil patterns from week to week.  They break down fast because everyone uses 200grit balls the first game, but is still tighter than most houses.

Though that could definately depend on your PAP.  For me, pin at grip center means a 5 1/4" pin to PAP distance.  however, if your PAP is only 3 1/2" over, you're drilling it almost leverage, and that could be trouble.

I've never tried a pin in palm drill because I figured that you need head oil and lots of it in order for this drill to work unless you have no hand at all, right ??  How would this drill differ from an pin axis drill in terms of getting through the front.

What I see in Tucson is dry, dry and more dry.  So I'm usually piping it straight and hard to control the backends or wheelin' and dealin', depending on where the traffic is on the lanes that day.  Layouts are usually long pins in order to get it throught the front consistently.   If I ever saw true heavy oil, I would consider a drill like this, but it hasn't happenend yet.

My PAP is somewhere in the 5.5" over range.

Just because the pin is low does not necessarily mean early hook.  Pin height also determines how quickly the ball revs up when it finds friction.  Placing the pin below the fingers or even on the midline will make the ball rev up more gradually and give it more of an arcing finish rather than the hard snap off the dry you see with a pin up layout.   Moving the pin further away from the PAP will promote length before the ball gets into a roll, since the core has a longer way to travel before it migrates to a stable position.  When the ball does roll, however, it will transition more slowly and make for a continuous, arcing finish.

So what you're saying is that  the pin-to-pap distance is what determines length and how high or low the pin is determines how aggressive it is off of the friction.  Based on that, it could definitely be used to control over/under and when the backends are just ridiculously snappy.  It might be something I want to consider because I'm in the process of buying a second rival to complement my first one and something like this might be a better choice than something close to a pin axis drill, which was my original intent.

Thanks Dan, I always thought that pin height determined length more than the pin to PAP distance.  Based on this discussion, it's appears to be the other way around.

One more question, what kind of pin to CG length and topweight work better for this kind of layout ??
