Title: BURST!
Post by: soonerdallas on April 22, 2010, 05:11:26 AM
for those of you who loved the resurgence it's back! same core and cover just comes polished and a cheaper price on buddies. put it at 1000 and you have the original resugence. This is my all time favorite ball so i could not be more excited about this. ball is on columbia site release date 5/20

only difference I see is what looks like a very slight change in the core. at least thats what the numbers show.

looks very appealing I must say!

i dont get how a heavy oil monster becomes a medium to dry  lane ball when you put it to 4000 polished. i dont think the oil has changed that much since the original. i still have my rival OOB surface, and its still a medium/medium heavy ball with a weaker core and cover.

The Resurgence was a great ball, but I have a question.

Is this what its come to, releasing the EXACT same ball with a new name, surface, and color?

If that's the case, why change the stuff? Why not just let it be a reissue and be done with it?

The only difference I see is that Burst does not have the same hook ratings as the Resurgence, but I bet that's a function of the 4000 surface on the Burst versus the 1000 surface on the Resurgence.

It's the same ball.

The diff changed 043 to 040 and they even say of u put it back to 1k it would be a resurgence maybe a board or two weaker it also looks like they shaved off two corners of the core at the bottom as well

This should be a great piece. Brings back one of the favorites of many bowlers out there, with a few modifications of course. This will certainly be weaker than the Resurgence. Touch more length, but still smooth off the spot. Can't wait to get it!

Juggernaut - What it has come to is that with 6 to 8 guys on the same lane pair throwing aggressive, strong surface balls, the only rational move is to less surface - Unless of course you want to do a Robert Smith and throw the ball over the left channel or you can throw the ball accurately at 25 mph.

O.K., I get that, but why release the same ball with only a name, color, and surface change? If it's the Resurgence, why not just say so? I mean with the way they word things, aren't they saying that's what this ball is?

People are going to put whatever surface they want on the ball anyway, aren't they? Couldn't they polish a Resurgence just as easily as they can sand a Burst?

So why call it something else? Just to put out another product for C300 junkies who don't do their homework to buy?

They released the same ball, with the same over, but they changed the surface... true. But they didn''t call it the resurface because, A) to your typical house bowler, the "Resurgence" didn''t do what they wanted to see it do (go long, flip hard), and B) not everyone has the ability to change the surface of a ball if they just came out with the resurgence again. So they released this, the same basic idea, and re-released it with a core that will give them a "rolly" look, but a surface that is closer to a motion that will sell better to your THB... Idk if I''m right or not, but that is my thinking...

Here's the specs from ballreviews.com:
  Color: Black/Gold/Silver
Core: Resurgence
Core Type: "New Era" Reactive
Surface: 1000 Abralon
RG Differential: .040 (Medium Flare) on a scale of .000-.080 Low Flare-High Flare
RG Average: 2.47 (Very Low) on a scale of 2.43-2.80 Very Low-High Break Point
Recommended Lane Condition: Medium to Heavy Oil
Description: Unmatched "Friction" potential - Mid lane move with a continuous backend motion. No quit in this one!

You just have to make sure you're comparing apples to apples, like 15lb specs vs 16lb specs!!!

This is cut&paste straight from the C300 site, highlighted to point out the reason for my question:

"It’s Back by popular demand!  We couldn’t make you wait any longer.  The Resurgence Core is Back and Bursting on the scene.  And yes, we wrapped that core with the original New Era shell formula.  We designed this one for medium conditions by polishing it with our standard polished 4000 finish to give all bowlers a more even arc on medium to drier conditions.  Leave it out of the box and you’ll get a long and even arc to the pins or add some surface and experience a true Resurgence."

So, if it has the Resurgence core, the Resurgence cover, and the only difference is surface finish, is it a BURST, or is it simply a polished Resurgence?

Like you said, not everyone has the ability to change the surface if they don't like it, so why would the MANUFACTURER even mention "adding surface to experience a true RESURGENCE"?

The resurgence was a popular ball and alot of people I know that had them loved them or still have them, but always complained they couldn't stick with it long. This is the option for them. Or they can take the surface back and have a resurgence. The point is, it's not like columbia is offering this at high end price range, they're doing it at mid range, as they did with the freeze at the lower range with recycled coverstock/core. I don't see a big deal with it. If I went online and say high end pricing, I would probably comment on that, but to get it at 108 (buddies), that's fine by me. You're going to pay 80-150 internet price for a ball. This ball is coming in at the lower side of the spectrum. Take it for what it is.

I get that too. And I know it seems like I'm bit*hin* (which I'm not cause the Resurgence IS a great ball), just wondered why they felt it necessary to change the color and the name when they could've just re-issued it in a polished version.

I mean, the FREEZE is a mating of things from two seperate balls (the Messenger core and the  Momentum cover), not a re-production of something that already existed.

I guess it's more a marketing question than a viability question, just wondered why, if the Resurgence was good enough to be worth re-making, they felt it necessary to change the name and color?

Alright I see your point now. I guess one could always say we wanted that ball 2 years and maybe they're trying to avoid that. lol. Maybe they could of called a Resurgence Burst lol.
Title: Re: BURST!
Post by: leftyinsnellville on April 23, 2010, 12:57:46 PM
The Burst appears to just be a marketing decision.

The Resurgence was in their "High Performance" class of balls (most expensive).  The Burst is in the "Mid-Level Performance" class of balls (much less expensive).  If they just re-released the Resurgence in the Mid-Level Performance line, they risk customers delaying a future purchase on the next High Performance release in the hope the same ball would just be later re-released in a less expensive class.  Not a good trend for any company to set.  But by changing the surface, color, and name they avoid this potential problem, all the while leaving plenty of clues in the marketing language to let the more savvy bowler know that they're getting a high-end ball for a mid-level ball price.

Also keep in mind the timing of this release...just as the season is wrapping up.  In order to spark interest during the typical slow season for bowling balls sales, Columbia releases a proven performer at a lower price.  They didn't have to spend any money on R&D, they'll probably not spend much on marketing, and there is likely to be a fair number of these babies selling.

Overall a pretty shrewd marketing move by Columbia.

Should be close to the Momentum, thus making it an AWESOME piece! Burst will probably be a little smoother off the spot and a few boards less overall, but will definitely mirror the Momentum.

As for Columbia releasing the "same ball"...I see it as giving the customers exactly what they wanted. Since the Resurgence and Momentum were discontinued, countless people were in search of these balls brand new and/or BEGGING that these balls be brought back. Well...they got it! Essentially the same ball as the Resurgence, yes, with the numbers slightly tweaked and a different surface. Not to mention all of this at a LOWER price point. For the money, this ball's going to be well worth the investment.

I've tried to read through all the comments that have been made on this thread.  I don't think I see what normally is the case when a company releases a ball that appears to be the same as a different one since it was discontinued.  The color change has a great deal to do with reaction as well.  If anyone has thrown the original 900 Global Break vs the 900 Global Break Out, they are the identical pieces but the color changed.  The Break Out is so much stronger than the original.  When they made the Mission, they had all different color choices besides white (solely Hammer line).  They chose red.  This was a color step down from the color that was the most aggressive(Product manager indicated the strongest was a horrible color).  Sorry to make this long winded but I wanted to make sure that this was not just my personal opinion.
