Use clean-n-dull it works the best to keep it clean and tacky.

Spray some ball cleaner on it and wipe it off.

If you want a deeper clean, run it through your dishwasher with the "dry" function turned off.

How many balls should you put in the dishwasher at a time?

As many as you want (and will fit in the dishwasher).  Mine can hold 4 on the bottom rack.
