Title: Eruption replacement
Post by: thedjs on July 16, 2019, 05:01:11 PM
My wife has an old blue Eruption that is in bad shape.  What ball in the Ebonite family would be good replacement?

Thanks.

Probably a GB3 Pearl

Well if she throws #12 can get a Eruption Pro here.  Can probably find a NIB Eruption Pro in whatever weight new in box fairly easily on ebay.

Probably a GB3 Pearl

I’m not sure about this. I have both, and although it’s been a while since I’ve thrown my GB3 Pearl, that’s not the first ball that comes to mind. The covers and the differential are different.

The Eruption Pro was unique in that it was a solid with a low differential. I have two NIB in storage for when my current one wears out.

What level of bowler is she?  Unless she is a higher average looking for specific reaction, there are many balls from all manufacturers at this performance level.

I have a GB-3 Pearl and, for me, it covers a lot of boards.  I think this might be too strong for a replacement for her.  But thanks for the input.

She bowls in leagues and carries between a 155 and 160 average.  Very slow ball speed but she can hook it quite a bit.  I was wondering about the blue Vibe or something on that order.  Do want to stay in the Ebonite family if possible.

I would say the new Orange Vibe

Based on specs, it looks like it could be similar.

After dark pearl or even solid would be a good option

I really think the Web Tour will be the best replacement in the EBI family.

Web Tour = Eruption Pro Blue ??  ???

I can't think of 2 balls that are more different.

Web tour, and Eruption blue are polar OPPOSITES; Web is earlier, and more off the spot, while the Eruption is later, and smoother.

Not close of a comparison imo.

My Web Tour is the smoothest ball I've rolled. Love that subtle downlane reaction. Now, my GB3 is much stronger than my Web Tour...........

That's all very nice, but how did you come to the Web Tour = Eruption Pro??

I never said that. I said it would be a good replacement. Based off my experience with the web tour and the description of the Eruption pro on C300's website, "blend out wet/dry conditions on medium to light oil patterns." My web Tour does just that for me. Perhaps take the factory polish off the Eruptiuon and you probably have similar shape.....

Given that you haven't thrown the Eruption Pro, I can see how the website descriptions would be misleading. Even taking off the factory finish of the Eruption Pro wouldn't make them similar. The Web Tour has a more aggressive cover under any circumstances.

Here is another possible recommendation -- Columbia Black Chaos. On the surface, it doesn't sound like a close match on paper. I found that the Black Chaos is more aggressive than the Eruption Pro, but not by much.

I switched to my Black Chaos last night in the third game burn, and the reaction reminded me a lot of the Eruption Pro. The two balls come with the same factory finish (500/1000 w/Powerhouse Factory finish), and for me have similar hook shapes.

I'm going to throw the 2 balls side-by-side this weekend to make sure I'm not blowing smoke.  ;)

Heat Lava would be my choice.  RG is pretty similar.  Diffs are similar.  Main difference is Heat Lava is a pearl and the Eruption Pro is a solid.  However, be willing to bet if you take the Lava to 3000 or 4000 with no polish you may get pretty close.

Everyone is over thinking this.  160 ave with slow ball speed means almost anything she throws is burning.   Tamest entry level ball you can find is going to be as good as Eruption was

That's more of what I was thinking.  My original thoughts were something like the blue Vibe or the Turbo/R.  Most of the other balls mentioned would, more than likely, be too strong.
