New ball suggestions
« on: December 26, 2013, 03:16:56 PM »
Hello all!

This is my first post, so wanted to introduce a bit since it does relate to my question...

I'm Nick, I started bowling about 10 years ago in high school and bought a used Columbia Throttle for my first ball. I LOVED it. Had it for about 3 years, and even bowled my highest game with it. I've had a couple balls in between, but not one that I've liked as much.

Now that I'm starting to bowl again after a couple year break, I'm looking for a ball. I want something very similar to the throttle (since it's retired), but I'm not very familiar with the specs and picking out balls. Any help would be really appreciated!

How do you throw the ball and what kind of lane condition do you typically see?  Do you throw the ball pretty fast, slow, or average?  Do you crank the ball or just lay it down smoothly?  We have to ask these things because todays equipment is much different from that of 10 years ago.

That would probably help, haha. I'm right handed. Most lanes I bowl are moderate to heavy oil. I throw the ball a little faster than average, and lay it down smoothly. When I throw the ball, I stand a little to the right of the center of the lane. I'll bring the ball back straight, bring it forward straight and rotate my hand from underneath the ball to a position like you would be going to if you were to shake someones hand. I aim to get the ball to outside of the lane on the right and catch the dry boards on the lane.

Sorry, Hope that helps!

Based on what you are saying, I would look into something like the new Take Down.  If I remember correctly, the Throttles were balls that really revved up on the backend without being too flippy.  With the higher differential of the Take Down, it will do just that; rev up and be continuous on the backend without being flippy (due to the OOB coverstock).  Plus, if you are a little speed dominate, you may want something with a surface that isn't shiny to help read the lane pattern and give you some forgiveness on off shots.

I just found out that the Take Down is not out until January 7th unless pro shops have a couple already.  If you cant wait that long, then the Smack Down would work also.  It is the same core, just a little different cover.  I believe the Smack Down is a hybrid whereas the Take Down is a pearl, although a dulled pearl.  You cant go wrong with either.  It just depends on your urgency to get one.

The smackdown is a great ball, very predictable and continuous.
would not hesitate to recommend this ball to anyone, it is that good
