Picked up a 16 lb. Spirit... what can I expect?
« on: January 06, 2010, 02:34:08 PM »
Hey guys I ended up snatching up a 16 lb. Spirit for dirt cheap, I didn't even bowl when this thing was being rolled down the lanes so I have no idea what to expect.  A couple bowlers have told me that this ball is great when the heads are fried and everything is having trouble holding pocket.  I'm trying to squeeze this ball under a Freeze drilled 5 1/2 pin to PAP (Pin over ring) and the CG kicked in towards my Center Grip.  Think this will work out?

When the Spirit came out it was the sleeper of it's era. Much the same as the Freeze is now. It was very easy to get down the lane with (at least for me) a very angular backend. For a ball that retailed at a suggested price of $90.00 plus tax and grips you could not beat it. Many of my customers would drill 2 or 3 because of the performance for the price.

My experience with the Spirit was very different than most others.

I saw several other people with similar games to mine have good success with this ball, so I decided to try one. Mine was awful, hooked very little, hit was weak. I sanded it, and the 4 shots I threw were: flush, weak 10, bucket, washout (all decent shots on THS). Even though I was using a towel, the oil seemed to stay on the ball surface. I got rid of the ball soon after.

Several months later, I went to the Icon seminar. After the classroom session was done, I was able to talk to the Columbia rep (Danny Speranza, I think). I asked him about this ball, told him how it had looked so good, but mine was so bad. He let me in on a little secret. Of course the ball was introduced after 9/11 when there was a big patriotism/USA feeling. As such, the ball was made to be a good quality ball, even though the price was low. He told me the demand was much more than expected, and future batches of Spirit's were made with "whatever leftover material was available" (his words). So, he said, that my Spirit sounded like it was probably regular urethane!

Hopefully, you get a good one, and you should like it if you do. If you get one like I got, it may still be useful as long as you realize what it is. Good luck.

There were 2 Spirits, not talking about the Spirit II (Purple/Burgundy swirl), which was actually a third ball.

The first Spirit was black in color and was an excellent ball. A combination of a mild, high RG core with a BASF designed coverstock that was a blend of  resin with a light load of particles. It was a dynamite control ball.

The 2nd Spirit (or better yet, a 2nd issue) was made based on the surprising success of the first. It was dark blue in color and was never anywhere near as good as the first.

I'm actually kinda hoping for this.  I bought a Freeze as a good step down from my Hyroad... and it is a step down, just not enough for my personal preference.  My Hyroad is still OOB, and what I find is that this ball has a ton of midlane for me, where as the Freeze gets down the lane just a touch further.  There are days when the shot is just completely gone, so I was kinda looking for a ball that was "weak" with a good core in it.  I just can't seem to get those pancake cores to carry well for me.

Pretty accurate....  But I believe it was the weight block that was changed..
The first run used a high tech weight block... I forget what color the first ball was,  either dark blue or black.... The second ball used a weaker weight block... And it was a different color then the first run...
