Filling in a gap
« on: January 09, 2008, 02:46:29 AM »
I asked a question earlier about a specific ball, and got some good responses. So I am going to try it again.

I have a Resurgence in OOB finish, which works great on the heavier patterns. I have a Rival, shined, that works great on my normal house shots I face. Problem is I have too big a gap in reaction between these balls. I found this out at a tournament last weekend. I was using the Resurgence, and I was just in a no carry zone, left 10 pin after 10 pin. Where I was at, stone 10, move left, flat 10, move right, goes high. And the Rival just wasn't strong enough to make it back and give me any room.

So my question is, what is the best way to fill in this gap? I have 2 thoughts:
1) Get another Resurgence, and either drill it a little weaker and.or shine it
2) Get another Rival, drill it stronger and leave it in OOB finish

Which is the better solution? Or does someone have another idea? Any ideas are welcomed.

Great little dancer. That guy she was with? I'm sure he's a close personal friend, but tell me, what was he doing with her panties on his head?
Uh-oh, Rexie, I don't think this one's got the distance."

From what I have seen from these two balls I would say drill another Rival. I have seen alot of good things from the Rival. Seems to be more flexible with drillings an cover changes than the Resurgence.

You're probably better off with a stronger Rival because of the ball's versatility.

Many bowlers do not realize that beside the core or surface of a ball drilling layouts has a big impact on how a ball will react in different lane conditions. I am a tweener and had three Black Widow solids all drilled differently for different lane conditions. The first one was pin 5.5 inch from pap and mb 75 degrees which was went long and very strong in the back. Great on mediums to medium dry. The second one was pin 4 inch from the pap and mb 90 degrees which did not go as long as the first one and much smoother in the back. Great on medium to medium oil and also dryer backends.  The last one was drilled pin under the fingers 4 inch from the pap and mb at 45 degrees. Great on heavier conditions. As you can tell that I love the Black Widow solid. It's hard to tell you what to do unless we know how your Resurgence and Rival are drilled. I recently drilled up a Resurgence for heavy conditions and the Rival for everything else. If you like both balls get another and drill it differently. You might want to consider the Black Widow Bite. It came out after I bought the
Resurgence and the Rival. My Rival is a little weaker than my third Black Widow Solid and from the reviews I read the Bite is supposed to be about 5 boards stronger that the original Black Widow Solid. That sound like it might be between the Resurgence and the Rival. I'm going to get one soon. Good luck.

Best bet would be another Rival, leaving it OOB surface

Honestly, The Bite is stronger off the dry boards than the Resurgence. But the Resurgence is stronger in oil. I think the bite will cover more boards on a THS. Just because you are using the drier outside. I still can't believe how many boards my Bite covers. If you get a Bite to fill the gap you want it drilled weak.

I wanted to bring this back to the top after watching the PBA telecast this week. (Not that I am comparing myself to Wes Malott) It was interesting to see Wes throw the shined Resurgence to open the telecast. It appears to start he went away from most of the advice given earlier in this thread. He only switched to a Rival after a game when the lanes broke down just a little. Just wondering if anyone had a change of heart after watching that show or if there are any new ideas out there.
