action & action packed, ball comparison
« on: July 01, 2006, 07:52:42 AM »
what's the main difference between these 2 balls aside from the type of finished on the cover? i'm planning to get 1 of them. what reaction will i be expecting between the 2?

what's in my bag is The One (1000 grit wet sand) & a Strikezone(400 grit sanded)

i needed something that will bite through carry down or for longer patterns. help!

Action starts up quite a bit sooner than the Action Packed, Action Packed has a stronger backend, but the Action covers more boards

IMHO, based on my first hand knowledge of the two balls, the Action and Action Packed compliment each other very well.  The Action will handle more oil than the Action Packed, assuming thaqt backends are the same.  However, the Action Packed has a little more recovery built in to it's coverstock.  As previously stated, the Action will read the midlanes a little more than the Action Packed.  Unless you've got lotsa hand, the Action Packed will stay in your bag on oily conditions.  There will be simply too much skid before the coverstock has a chance to help out.  One thing you might like to try, is a quick hit of the M80^2's coverstock with a grey scotch brite.  This will create a little more midlane read and a little more arc to the backend.  Unless you've got two or three of these lying around, this wouldn't be my first suggestion.  There's plenty of other equipment that will perform those duties without coverstock alterations.

i have 2 actions one with the pin up and one with it under. the action is alot earlier the the action packed but is not as angular then the action packed. depending on what u are looking for the ball to do is whih one u would want to buy. just remeber that the action max is now out and that maybe the one u need. but just remember that we can get the right ball reaction for u with the right information from u. questions just drop me a line

If it were me, I would wait a couple of weeks and
get the Action Max.  It is the best of both worlds.
Rolls later than the Action but earlier than the
Action Packed.  It has more backend than the Action
Packed and is much stronger.  Overall, I think it is
a better, more versatile ball.

MAXIMIZE YOUR PERFORMANCE with the stunning hook and power of the new Columbia 300 Action Max. A redesigned higher RG Action core provides increased length for maximum power, while the new breakthrough M80^2 Friction Plus shell delivers maximum friction and hook to the pocket.

so higher RG core has stronger backend than a lower RG core? sorry i'm a idiot when it comes to the core design or placement

basically what i needed right now is a ball (preferrably one of the action) that i can use when my other balls just skids all the way to the pins or skids way past the breakpoint. i'll get my drilling profile from my driller & post it here

With the balls you have now I don't think you would have any trouble with longer patterns. I think your balls are burning up since they are both sanded solids with strong asymmetric cores. I really don't think the action would be much different from what you have now so I would suggest the action packed or if you want to wait the max would also work.

i don't think it's burning up either coz it would roll/hook earlier & hit the beak or go brook w/ weakly if it does. skidding happens when there's thicker volume of oil & there's plenty of carrydown. i usually used my sanded Szone to determine the amount of oils. can see thick oil rings on my track area during those days

might need to invest on a particle / pearl or solid w/ light load particles ball to tackle this type of lane conditions

so let me trim down my choices between the Action Packed & the Max. which goes longer & which has a stronger sharper hook off the dry?

i got lil hand on to begin but lotsa speed to spare. i can give it a lil more hand but not very consistent in that department. my the one w/ 1000 grit drilled  aggressive still goes long of i don't watch my speed. my Szone was drilled to give it the most length.a bad decision on my part. i'm planning to have it plug & re-drill aggressively & use it for the meantime to tackle oily lanes

lastly, I would like to thank you all who took time to answer my queries. it's been very helpful!

I've thrown both.  I read you wanted something for when your other equipment is sliding past the break point and things like that.  If you really want one of these two and that's what you want it for...the Action would be your best bet.

The Action never worked for me on a Medium oil pattern, it would always roll out, but it worked OKAY on patterns with some heavier volumes.  The Action Packed was great OOB on a medium pattern with snappy back ends, but anytime there was oil, it skated for days.

Hope that helps.
