Big Shot Coverstock Death?
« on: August 10, 2007, 03:40:21 AM »
After about 125 games my Big Shot has just died all of a sudden.  Yes I clean it regularly and I have also give it a hot water bath several times.  It just skids and never really gets into its roll.  Last night a guy at my house with tremendous revs threw the ball and it hardly even moved.  I'm going to try and rough it just a little to see if that helps.  Has anybody had any trouble with theirs?  I'm not nocking columbia as I have several balls by them, I know every now and then you'll get a dud.  Just wondering about other peoples experiences.

Pehaps it's time for a resurface and maybe a check of your Summer conditions. There may not be enough oil volume or length wise to let the ball perform. It's a strong piece.

I would resurface it and check the oil, if everything checks out fine, try the ebonite hook again.

The oil is there I bowled on the Cheetah pattern last night and couldn't get it to do much at all.  I will probably try to resurface it this weekend.

AH! Cheetah is a short pattern. Your ball was burning up once it cleared the oil: too much friction and lost energy before reaching the pocket. Your ball is fine. You used it on the wrong pattern.

amendment: That may not be always the case depending on your cover prep because the pros used high friction equipment.

The Cheetah pattern is normally a light oil pattern - most definitely NOT a place for the Big SHot. I'd bet it was burning up in the midlane.

I have about 200+ games on my Big Shot. I guess I maintain the ball well, cause I've never had to give the ball a bath at all. I do only use the ball for heavy oil conditions.

200 games on only heavy oil patterns will REDUCE the performance of any and every ball. It needs some attention, like ... YESTERDAY!

It's funny that you said that, cause I used the ball yesterday on a pick-up league. Again, the ball still plays like new. I wipe the ball down before start, right when I step to the lane, and after the second game (can't play on third game to stong). Can't complain.

ElectricLeftSlider,

Hey, lucky you or Columbia's Optima cover is, err, was something very special. In any case, I'd play it safe and treat it. It couldn't hurt.

Thanks for the tip Charlest. I'll keep that in mind.
