Title: An open letter to BR Admin RE: multiple aliases
Post by: Robadat on January 08, 2012, 07:42:08 AM
It has become quite apparent that there is a small group of users here using multiple fraudulent aliases here in a concerted effort to bring great harm and damage to the integrity and reputation of this great bowling information website.
I respectfully request that BR.com's Administration fully and effectively return to a sitewide enforcement of
Posting Rule #9 - Each member is allowed one login account. Registering with multiple accounts is not allowed.
I would however suggest that you modify this rule to allow a maximum of two user names for each account, one to be used for personal use and one for business related posts provided the party requesting the business related account offer sufficient proof to you that they actually own a bowling related business.
To any member of the site that agrees with this request, I ask you to simply respond to this thread with a response that states, "I fully agree with and support this request"
On Edit: I have sent a PM to Ballreviews informing them of this thread and asking them to act on it.
Update: I have heard back from Ballreviews and they have assured me that they are well aware of this problem and are working on providing a workable solution.

+1. I fully agree with the request to limit the number of user IDs to two for the purposes described.

Sounds good to me, but why the late push for this? The crap posts have been piling up for over a year now...
Further, how do you propose br monitors/checks new users to make sure it's not a current member using a different machine and email account, maybe even on a different internet connection? I'm just not sure it's possible to keep a determined, persistent troll from having multiple accounts.

We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced in the past. I can assure you that we will do our best to monitor this situation. We have a few different moderators who contact us with reports on the site and any information you can provide would help. It can be hard to block or link certain users because they can create new accounts under different IP addresses or use different computers for different accounts but if you have any information that may lead to us cleaning up the site, we would greatly appreciate this.
Thanks

I find this whole thing laughable... I believe what this basically amounts to here is a witch hunt...
The only problem I have with individuals creating multiple IDs for is if they were trying to pose as another... Not the funny spoof type, like "Drool daddy", but actually use a letter(s) or number(s) to misrepresent themselves as another already member of the site.. That would the only time I would/have complain to the powers that be here...
And you still want "bowling business related" to have 2 identities...? Why? So they can post in the moderated bowling related & conduct business as "respected members" & then switch identity for the non moderated so they can say whatever they want & flame others w/out hurting their reputations? Cause that's all that would do &/or encourage... And I wouldn't doubt that it's been happening already...
My 2 cents whether you wanted it or not...

Well MP, there were at least a dozen people who provided confirmation here (in this thread) that this isn't "laughable". Using multiple IDs to intentionally promote the advancement of false bowling information in legitimate forums is serious. At least if you care about the integrity of BR. Trying to stop it through reports to BR is not a "witch hunt".
But thanks for your insights.....

Oh, you must mean this post by a new member there who just joined that site today...
I'm new to this site. I finally came over from the dark side (BallReviews.com) as I got tired of the B.S. over there. It's gotten so bad, that they've given moderator credentials to regular users in an attempt to clean up the mess they have over there. All that's done is alienate other users because now the chosen users who are moderating the forum are banning other users for nothing more than disagreeing with their views on balls, accessories, etc. Or worse, for disagreing with their political views in their unmoderated forum.
I assume this site is likely much better?"
I must have missed all the responses from all the people over there because I couldn't find any other post on that site about BR.com.
Oh, wait there weren't any...
Do us all a favor and stay over in that site buddy cause you ain't fooling anybody here...

Thanks for stalking me, but this is my second posting today, ya forgot to check in the non-modded forum...
Try to stay on topic here and read the OP and if you agree with it, then post your agreement. If not, don't let the door hit YOU on the way out.
And IF I were a mod, you would have already received your lightning bolt.
